  • Siting at a light, looked to the right, there was a '55 Bel Air hardtop parked on the side of Clinton Ford with out tags... a Saturday morning trade in. Made the right, then left into the dealership. Went inside. "Is that Chevy for sale? "......"Son if you have $100 I will put temp tags on it so you can drive it home"...Done deal, June 1959. Built a street killer.

  • I agree with the other guys = a dremel tool job.
Back in the '50s, I stamped or engraved my birthday in parts and tools in the event of a robbery.........which did occur November 15, 1963.
DO NOT REMOVE THAT VIN PLATE. You will loose it.........then you will have to buy one from me.

  • Thank you to all on comments. Looks like they took a real small center punch to do it.

  • It looks like it was done with an electric engraving pen. Back when I was a police officer my dept. would loan out engraving pens for people to mark valuable items, usually with a drivers license number but it could be any number the owner wanted to use, so they could be traced in the event they were stolen. Perhaps a previous owner did that for that reason. Because the factory tag doesn't appear to have been tampered with, I doubt the engraved number was placed there by a DMV for titling purposes. We would also have a service come to the police station from time to time that would etch the cars VIN in the window glass as a theft deterrent.
Just a guess on my part, but it also kind of resembles a police report number. My agency would used that format, CR (Case Report) 16 (last two digits of year)- 502 (the 502nd call in 2016). But this uses the letters DR which stumps me.

  • That is not a factory job someone did that in later years after the car was sold.

  • Never seen that before. I had a 56 Chevy, and the VIN tag was on the door post, so that part is correct.... On my Model-A they had something similar, and that was the regional final assembly plant. However, I don't think GM had a network like that.
