1961 Morris Minor Traveler - Woody Restomod
This unique 1961 Morris Minor Traveler is totally restored and upgraded, including hand built chassis in order to successfully utilize the complete running gear of a 2002 Mazda Miata 1.8 twin cam. This is no normal engine and transmission upgrade since the bespoke build now allows the Morris to use all parts of the Miata running gear including sub-frames, suspension, steering and braking systems as well as engine and transmission, which is automatic. This therefore truly combines the classic shape, look, and feel of a Morris Woody with modern day performance & handling, and braking. The car is the length of a standard Traveler, but has subtly flared arches both front and rear to accommodate the track of the Miata. It has Minilite wheels, and a leather interior with bucket seats. Classic air conditioning has also been added together with a period look but new radio and electric aerial. Before installation, the Miata engine was serviced and had timing belts replaced. The rebuild was undertaken in Houston, Texas, over about a three year period as a retirement project by a truly dedicated enthusiast. Initially from the UK, his original plan was to repatriate the car for use there – hence it remains right hand drive, but being small relative to many cars on US roads, this is not an impediment once you get used to the feel of the car – and with all round glazing, visibility is excellent. He advised the consignor ( who bought it from him directly in 2015 ) that not counting his own labor, he had over $36,000 invested in the car, which he has done less than 1000 miles since the rebuild. Some details of the rebuild may still be available on the Morris Minor Forum where he posted regularly as ‘Texas Mongrel’ as the build progressed. An extensive file of receipts will come with the vehicle as well as a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate with details of the car as originally built in 1961. An original sticker from 1965 remains affixed to one of the rear windows indicating it was at the Silverstone Grand Prix that year so despite being to all intents ‘new’, it has retained period touches and feel. This is a unique car for the right enthusiast. A rebuild like this would cost multiples of the asking price. The consignor is a Morris minor enthusiast and the only reason it is for sale is he is downsizing his collection and has reluctantly chosen this car for sale.
