Tony Pedregon crash

2007 NHRA Powerade Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon is recovering after a fiery crash at the 48th NHRA Carquest Auto Parts Winternationals in Pomona, CA.

Pedregon, unaware of his red-light start during his first-round race against 14-time champ John Force, kept his foot in the throttle when his car exploded at about the 1,000’ mark. With Pedregon crossing the finish line just 18-inches behind Force, the distraction was enough for the ex-champ to deploy his chutes late, causing him to take his Mustang-bodied Funny car into the sand pit of Pomona’s relatively short shut-down area. Force was not injured, and his car had just minor damage.

Pedregon was able to walk away from the fiery crash, but ended up with second-degree burns on his right hand. He was transported to Pomona Valley Medical Center and returned to the track later that day with his hand bandaged.
