An electrical headache can make a great car a pain

Ya' know for me when I hear someone talking about an engine/trans combo in an odd light little car. The mind starts wondering over endless possibilities. Similar cars or differrent engine/ trans combos in the same little car. I never really had the realization of it till the other day. Sure I've seen certain combos that looked downright scarey in light cars, usally they look over done, but this one made sense. To top it off, it lookes almost like it grew there.

The vehicle I speak of is a 1978 280Z. It's yellow, canary yellow. The owner just installed a 6.0L LS2 and T56 6speed trans from a low mileage '04 GTO. He called me to assemble a wiring harness for the computer and integrate it to the chassis' harness.

Fired it the first shot last night. Everything works perfectly, except the tach. Anyway after it warmed up I rapped the pipes a little. I thought the engine was gonna jump right out of the chassis! I believe the 405 horse sticker these engines have on them. Can't wait to see what it really can do.......

Too bad there's snow on the ground.............YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!.........:)

I know some of you have similar stories. Maybe some you like to dream up.

-Brant

Superbeetle w/440 Dodge. My neighbor won't let me drive it.

Buddy had a 70 vette with a blower and stock tires. VERY squirrelly. Tromp it in 4th gear at 90 mph and it would slow down as the tires melted. Made the cover of CarCraft in the early '80s at Indy.

Had a friend back in the early '70s, wrecked his '67 Camaro. it was the one with the factory cross ram,2 4bbl. we put an automatic behind the engine and stuffed it into an MGB. The car flew, but couldn't stop worth a darn. Wouldn't mind one of those motors now.

Brian, the car is still out there. I see it all the time at local car shows. Did you see it at the Crown Point show? It was there with the Catain Kidd front engine dragster. He also has tons of pics from old US30 dragstrip.

Small, light body and big engine...where have I seen that before? Gasser wars! Detroit sort of tried to do the same but everytime they did rather it be for speed or MPG the project got heavy thereby defeating the basic idea. I had installed two fuel injection units which made me the local expert(????). Was called upon to see if I could get a tuned port running. Tangle of wires with stuff just twisted together. Fired first time and I fell over backwards.

I was just out of high school in 1957......yeah, Im old. A buddy took me to a friend of his to see his car. The guy wasn't home, but his mother let us look at his car. It was an Austin-Healy with a 283 c.i. Chevy engine with three two barrel carbs. Never saw the car or the guy again. Was always curious how it would have performed. It looked good!

I borrowed my dad's '72 Maverick one time. It was a year or two old at the time. I had never driven it. It was the first car in the driveway so I took it for my little errand. I was surprised how peppy it was, it had a 289 with a two barrel and automatic. It was fun to drive. That was the only time I drove it. We lived in separate houses so the opportunity didn't come up again.

Dodge van that I stop light raced back in 70. After he whipped me, at the next light he slid the side door open and showed me an injected mid mount hemi! Awesome! Also had a old buddy show up in town once with a falcon station wagon that looked terrible. I didnt know it was him-after he kicked my butt he lowered his window and gave me a s#$% eating grin. He had a 289 hipo with the 2x4s on it that Ford had in that pos.

I did do a 302/c4 in a '52 MGTD. small and light, but not all that fast.

I think the craziest car that was over done, that I had the _________ to ride in. Was a girfriends dads blown 540 in a t-bucket. I think he said it made 1400 horses. All I know was at 70 he eased the pedal down and I happend to look over at the rear Mickey and it was smokin'. I really couldn't feel the car go any faster, it just kinda raised up a little and rev'd.

Ooooh! I still get goose bumps....

How about the Ferrari that Don pulled the V12 outta and dropped a hot SBC in? That's a seriously cool car that would make any Ferrari purist DIE!

I'm just surprised he hasn't received any death threats... Don? You still out there? Hello? Don?

When my uncle was a Richmond cop (narc squad) or something, he brought a 66ish Ford Econoline van out to my granddads house and we put a hipo 289/FMX with mustang posi in it. Painted green with a paint brush for the "cheap drug dealer" effect they wanted but would roast the N50s forever. That thing would make you throw yer undadraws in the trash.

Just an update on the little yellow Z car.

My buddy brought it out yesterday to show me since the roads were dry. Scary. From a roll at about 15 miles and hour, the thing hits the rev limiter in about 10 feet in first and 15 or so in second and the same for third. He let off and continued on his way. He was just leaving the shop and goofing off for me. His friend took an exact duplicate, one he built in california with the same ls2 and six speed, to the drags. Ran 10.87 with drag radials. Hehehehehehe.......

Brant, I can tell you that a 280 Z with a 400sbc/400 auto tranny, was fun. It would get squirlly real quick. drove it for about a year or so, then pulled the motor/tranny and put in a 81 silverado swb. Neighbor bought the Z and had plans to install a 396 moved about a year after that and have never seen it.

Came across these the other night, VW rabbit, all stock except for narrowed rear hubs. It was a shop vehicle for a while. Now has been rebuilt with a 460 Ford.I think it was more fun with the stock drivetrain. We took it to the Street machine nats and had a blast.

I did have a buddy with a chevette with a tunnelrammed full roller smallblock. It was tubbed like that rabbit. The four link wasn't adjusted right and if ya' mashed the gas it would hop up and turn sideways and head ya' straight for the telephone pole!. What a ride that was....
