I have my 39 Chevy listed on this site for $32,000. I get a phone call from Gateway Classics asking if I would consider listing it with them at $150.00 for 3 months sometime in Sept. I said I would think about it. Two weeks went by and they called again. I told them I was still thinking about it. I got a letter in Oct for a special rate of $90 for 3 months. I did not do anything about it. On Oct 27, I received another letter for a special free consignment for 90 days. Now I am interested. I called to confirm this and told them I would need to get about a week to get this lined up and delivered because it is a 250 mile trip one way. I need to make arrangements for this and they agreed. I find friends to help me get there and back, so I call and tell them it will be there on Wed. Keep in mind the only way they know I have this car it is on this site for $32,000. They called back the day before my trip and asked what I wanted for the car. I tell them $29,000 and I will work with them. They said they would only take the car if I would take $18,000, very misleading. The lesson learned is that I know it is easier to buy a car then to sell one. What do you folks recommend in selling a car. cwhipple@qconline.com

NOT having ANY PERSONAL past experience with Gateway, or any other consignment shops, I don't have an authoritive opinion to offer here. Sorry for your experience, Ron, but didn't the seersucker suits and sunglasses give it away??

Slow down boys.... now understand that I have worked with Gateway for many years through this site. I have had nothing but good reports on the success they have had selling cars for people on a consignment basis. Now, with that being said you must understand they are not going to list your car for your asking price and take nothing away in profit. They advertise their site heavily, spend money on the building, car shows and promotions to get people in to look at your car. I understand your concern over the advertising/vs/purchase price but I would like to allow Gateway the opportunity to answer and will request they respond to this thread. Lets not start name calling before we hear their program, O.K.? :-)

I have sold 2 cars on STREET RODDING. COM. Lots of good hits. I also look at a lot of cars on the site. But when I see that they are big dealers, I just pass them by. I just soon work with a individual. Going to a dealer is like going to a big car dealer to by a car. Its just not fun. I have been in one gateway show room and they do a good job of presentation. But I will stick with private party. I am not going to pay anybodys commission to buy a street rod.

Were they actually buying the car for $18K or just going to advertise it as for sale at that price? I think most of us just feel safer dealing with an individual instead of a consignment dealer. If they had actually purchased the vehicle with their own money and checked the car out and knew about it, that might be different.

Keep advertising on this site. Sold mine in under a month. This site gets a lot of hits and I am sure that there will be that certain someone looking for what you have.

I have had my best luck selling my cars in person at the Nats in L'ville and the Nats North in Kzoo.

I've purchased from the Nats North in Kzoo and twice at the GG Charlotte event.

Tammy I understand your concerns and I guess I feel they should have been more up front with me. My asking price was $32,000 they knew that I droped to $29,000. They told me they could put $18,000 in my pocket. the problem I have is i feel i should have been told that the first time. Keep in mind i did not call them i got two phone calls and three letters. they wait tell the day before after i have made arrangements to tell me not to bring it to them in less i would take $18,000. I can back it out my driveway and get $18,000. I also dont want name calling and hope that gateway replies. If i am at fault i would apoligize for starting this thread.

Ron, Keep the car listed in street rods for sale on this site. don't be in a hurry to sell, and settle for a price you don't want. Beleive me there is a back side for every seat. I sold my street rod that was listed here it took almost a year . Joe
