This is my next challenge,Typically my brakes normal driving work fine yesterday I need to panic stop and got a little worried. I have 39Chev with Disc brakes up front Drum in the back with a 7"booster mounted under the floor and a Wildwood proportioning valve.What happened was the peddal got real hard and I had to push very hard for the car to stop and I believe the right front grabbed and locked up. I didn't think it was going to stop. My first thought was is my proportioning valve working or adjusted correctly.Any ideas?

You didn't give us specifics on the system you have but I'm going to tell you what I have found and you can take it from there. The 7" booster is a little small. Check your brake pedal ratio, it should be between 4 and 6:1. Usually the hard pedal will be caused by these two areas. The bore of the M/C can also cause it too. The large the bore, the more pressure it will take to stop. If you are using a 'Vette M/C then the bore is most likely 1 1/8". This coupled with a 7" booster and maybe a low pedal ratio will cause the rock hard pedal feeling. Don't think the prop valve has anything to do with it.

Did you buy the booster and master as a combo? If not, the stroke of the master and the booster may be wrong. Just because a master will bolt up doesn't mean it will work properly. Some may not push far enough so you get low pedal, soft brakes and others will keep the master at a partial stroke, and act as if you were riding the brakes. As willys33 stated the ratio is very important. Also you may have a caliper that is hanging up, either internaly or externally. Crash, too is right the components must match, pressures also important.



Honestly I would have a pro shop do a brake inspection, Up here in Idaho we have those Midas guys, they are expensive, but the inspection is free and they are thorough. I'm lazy and they will catch something faster than I would, since that's how they make thier money. They don't know I intend to fix it my self when I show up. I just let them to do all the asbestos dust eatin' instead of me. -Brant

Not sure how long system has been in or if you have ever "panic stopped" before and had no problems. You might check to see what kind of vacuum you're getting from the motor. Marginal vacuum and a booster that could be just a little bigger could have you living on the edge! Willys covered major issues also, All of the system components have to work together and be setup to compliment each other.
