We have a 40 Chev with a 1965 Corvair front end with drum brakes. We want to put disc brakes on the existing spindles. Any recomendations or reservations? Anyone know where to find the rotors and hardware to complete this project? We are in Seattle area.

although they've been used for years i just dont trust corvair stuff. they we designed to carry a lite front end. i have refused to do them because i did'nt trust them. i've seen some last 20 years but have also seen the results of failure. i would think long and hard about replacing it.

I'd have to go with Bigdude on this one. My father in law has a Corvair front suspension in his 34 Chevy master sedan. The car has drums up front (and rear) and stops on a dime. Discs would be nice especially with less chance of fade. However, the suspension limits the car's ability to make U-turns. All U-turns end up as a 3 or 4 point turn. A pain in the but and could be a saftey issue. Yours is a larger and heavier car. I think I would give thought to a newer, more modern suspension rather than just brakes.

Had a friend that also had the Corvair front end. As I remember it they were swapped side to side. After a bunch of fiddling he finally put a MII in it and is very happy with the results. Bottome line in cost was the parts and headaches were just a tad cheaper than a new front end. Find a good reason to pull the engine...overhaul or a new one??? and while there do what has to be done for safety, handling and general updating.

Check out Clark,s Corvair Parts 413-625-9776 you can find them online search corvair they have a kit with 10.5 rotors and only a little machining of the hub done on a brake lathe They also carry the correct coil springs for a street rod with a Corvair front and SBC the main culprit of bad handling with bump steer is improper rate and free height. front works great with flaming river pinto/ rack. My experience hope it helps , with limited funds you got to go with what you got and adher to the KISS principal (keep it simple stupid)

Tom does that thing bumpsteer? those Corvair fronts were known for that and were used pre Must-2. If it was me and I had your money, I'd replace it just for safety reasons.
