I'm installing a new dash in my 39 and when I set up the panel I didn't even think of the placement of the tach & speedo yet eveyone's first question is why did I put the speedo on the right with the tach on the left in the cluster.

I s there a correct order for the gauges ?

Of course round here we put the speedo... where ever the hell you like! Where you can see it of course. The car won't go any faster either way.

Wow, are those industrial strength wiper arms and blades government surplus Space Shuttle Enterprise units??

Nice dash, who makes it?

As long as you can see them, who cares?

Well you're certainly right if they're both centered over the column, neither is closer to the driver. I'm thinking along the lines of the traditional '32 dash I guess. I love a column mounted tach too!

Still it's totally personal preference. You obviously liked the look of the layout when you mounted the gauges, so leave 'em there! And when people ask you why just say, "I did it to make you ask silly questions. It worked, didn't it?"

I'm with you on the tach being on the left. To me (and we all know that don't mean squat) the tach should be closer to the driver than the speedo. Practical? Probably not, but it's a hot rod, right? Plants the seed in the fertile mind of "What's the motor doing?... regardless of how fast I'm actually going."

Actually Eric is right on point. My dash is center mounted and my thought was the same – I’m more interested in the rpm than the speed but as I looked through a myriad of pictures of rods I noticed that for the most part the speedo is on the left.

I got the dash from Billet Specialties. The panel as shown is actually upside down. The scallops are supposed to be on the bottom but it brings out the scallops in the steering wheel better on the upper edge.

The gauges are anAuto Meter Antique Beige set. The wipers are USLESS ! they are billet units that have a blade about 6" long and wipe an arch of about 60 degrees. RainX saves the day.

The rest of the car . . .

Eric, assuming that the dash is uniform in shape and size, and the tack and speedo are mounted centered over the steering column, how does either become closer to the driver? Seems to me they would be equal distance from the driver, so it wouldn't matter if the tach were left or right of the speedo. Of course if you are thinking of mounting them in the far corners of the dash, then the placement question is of greater importance. If you want the tach closer than the speedo, then mount it on the column.

At my age confusion is a daily occurrence, please don't make it worse than it already is. ;-)

I've had cars witht them both ways. Just a matter of getting use to the layout. Most difficult position I ever had was with the guages mounted in the center of the dash and not straight ahead. Just not normal, took long time to adjust. Whatever floats your boat is the proper way.
