I am thinking about replacing the air cleaner on my small block in the 40 coupe with a cadillac or Oldsmobile 50's style unit. Does anyone know what clearance problems I might run into with the HEI or a/c compressor? Has anyone used the one from bitchin products that is 3/4 size? If some one has the diameter measurement of a stock one it would give me a starting point. Thanks - Jan

17 1/2 diameter 4 1/2 tall There are differant ones though. Some have a flat recess on the back ( that will clear an HEI) Had 1 installed on " KOOL 35" The Bitchin is o.k. , but a rough casting. Takes lots of work to prep and the $'s are a little high.

There was an article in one of the hotrod rags some years ago about building your own Caddy-style air cleaner housing using a 2-3" exhaust pipe mandrel bent "u", a piece of straight matching pipe and an old stock aircleaner for the top plate and bottom. Simple simon.

That way you can make it fit where you need to and add a cool-daddy paint job, plus have a modern element for filtering that air.
