I am in the process of building a steel body 27 model t roadster pickup. I am trying to decide on a power train and I think I want to use a 4 cyl with a standard shift. I am leaning towards using one of the iron 4 cylinders out of an early Chevy II if I can find one. I am working with a 100 inch wheel base chassis so I don't want to go with anything too long. Does anyone have any other ideas for a powerplant. This isn't going to be a rat rod but will look like it was built in the early 60's. Thanks for your input.

Back in the 70's there were lots of rods running around with Pinto 4 bangers and 4-speeds. Depending on the flavor of the pickup, this might be a cool combination... if you can find a Pinto.



I think the main reason for this choice was the whole gas wars thing, trying to have fun and keep some money in the pocket. There were a number of companies making performance parts for the Pinto motor (try to say that without laughing out loud) to squeeze anything you could out of one. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anything like that these days, but maybe this gives you a place to start. Good luck, and let us know what you decide to do.

Another thought... how about a Mazda rotary engine? They're tiny, make tons of HP, the aftermarket is flooded with performance goodies (think turbos!), and they sound so unusual when you're on 'em hard that people will be talking about it for weeks!



You could mount it pretty far forward and get a lot of extra leg room!



At Americruise '98 in Colorado, there was a little black early 30's coupe (I don't remember what it was, but it was small like a Bantam). I was really cute, but when he fired it up everyone about broke their necks trying to figure out what he was running. He rolled out of the parking lot, stabbed it, and disappeared. Never saw it again, dammit.

I saw a pickup or something (in the far reaches of my memory) that had a "Meyer Drake" four banger in it... now that's class....

Here's my .02. A buddy of mine had a Shay replica Model A w/a Pinto 4. He added twin carbs, a cam, and header. That little puppy was really quick for what it was and when we made a long distance run, he didn't have to stop every 125 miles or so for gas. Think he was getting about 20+ mpg with it and the engine really did look good. Has anyone thought about doing a Volvo 5 cylinder? Would really look wild in an engine compartment and my wife's daily driver with the turbo is definitely quick. Do valve covers that don't have a name and you'd really confuse the troops with 5 plug wires! Once I sell my 34 I'll be investigating doing that setup in a Speedway lowboy 32 kit.

Again, the Olds Quad 4 is a good choice. Gobs of power and you should be able to pick one up at the local boneyard cheap. Speedway Loboy...build one years ago and put 43K on it. Lots of fun.
