Well, I.ve been enrolled in the paint and refinishing class at my local community college now since August and I want to tell you guys ( and gals ) that I'm more versed on the body shop industry now than ever before. You earn your money the hard way and I can respect you now for the effort that is put into a nice paint job ! My project is slow moving at this point . I've been trying to get my frame and chassis into primer. ( the class allows you to bring in your projects to work on during class time ) At this time, my frame has been sand blasted and primed with epoxy , as well as my TCI suspension components, 4 bars and rear axle housing. Everything is still disassembled at this time. As it turned out, the class instructor runs a well known street rod and restoration shop in Pilot Mountain, NC and is a stickler on perfection. Glad that he is, and my project shows it with his expertise. The rest of this week , I'll be dobbing some body filler on the frame rails to, what he calls, slicking it up and smoothing it out. My rear axle housing was a rust pit when I started, but with his persistance, a lot of body filler and a lot of sanding, I'm glad I put the elbow grease to it 'cause it really turned out nice. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Where is this course located in NC? I live in Middle TN and would die for a course like that but no dice. I have a buddy who does it for a living and he has been teaching me when he can. I have filled, primed, and painted a rear bumper using Walmart filler, primer, and Black acrylic enamel spray can paint. For a serious novice like me it turned out decent. But I too have a much greater appreciation for what it takes

Don, The school is in Dobson,NC, just outside of Mt. Airy, right off I-77 and about 20 south of the Virginia border. The school is called Surry Community College. Tuition costs for out-of-state students tends to be quite high, but since I worked in Mt. Airy NC , I was able to get a better rate, even though I live in Virginia. It's 90% "hands on " training, with a few class room vidieos and demonstrations and of course a "test " or two, to keep the mind flexable.

Richard,

I too have been through the training at eastfield college for a couple of semesters. I have a different view of body work etc. after completing the sessions. This is definitely worth checking into if available at your local community college. They have top of the line equip, spray booths, plasma cutters etc. for your use while enrolled... Good luck to all.

I am with ya guys. I really love to create stuff but body work is not my strong suit. I need to stick to engines and wiring. The body work makes me crazy, mock it up, take it back apart to paint then assemble again. My hat is off to the guys and gals who do this well. Thank goodness they have the patience to do it. Best of luck on your training.
