Brant, Best guess is the clutch let go... At least I hope thats all it is.. its bad enough with an import that you have to pull the eng/trans out the top to replace the clutch. He has a lead on a trans if the worst happens... AAMCO(All Automatics Must Come Out) has given him an estimate of $600 parts and labor for a clutch... The car will not move on its own... The bad thing is I put a new clutch in it about 30K miles ago.... Steve
I had a bad dealing with the local AAMCO. I hope the rest of the chain is not the same. 600 dosen't sound too bad for a clutch job. Better get a good warranty. What kind of car is it?

Brant, sorry to inform you of this but AAMCO's reputation is nationwide. They aren't alone there's a whole bunch of shysters out their hoping to part you with your money. Some just worse then others.
I missed a hop (military flight) was stuck in Kansas City in 1961... bus ticket to LA was like $64.50....I think I had $65.... I rode that bus for three days and two nights with nothing to eat.... I learned what hunger really is...

Steve I called your son and the wheels are in motion. I know it is nerve racking worrying about your son so far away but don't worry, he has friends in Illinois. :-)

I just got off the phone this morning with Steve's son Bob and looks like Ron is going to help him out with transportation and that he has the hotel for another night. Bob said he would call me tomorrow and let me know what develops with his broken vehicle.

Was stuck in town with a broken shift ear on the wife's Buick. Spent numerous hours waiting for them to weld a new ear up to fit. This is where it gets good. I layed it out for them, toldthem where to cut and weld and then when all was said and done, they charged me travel time and cost for a place down the street to weld up the ear! They said they did not have a welder in their shop. Told them they should not have accepted the job, knowing there would be welding, or tell me me so I could decide. AAMCO main office sent me an email and wanted me to get with the manager of the shop to try to work something out. He called and gave me every song and dance invented. Just told him "Never mind". Will not use AAMCO again!
Hi guys and gals, Just to update you, the boy is back on the road without having to replace the clutch... For some damn reason the left halfshaft popped out of the transaxle. A tow, a new halfshaft, and labor and he's on his merry way again for only $260. That beats a clutch job anytime.. Thanks again to Tammy, Big Al, and Ron for their wonderful assistance. God only knows what would have happened without the help from you guys. Steve
OK guy's I just got off the phone with Ron Wiggins, a street rod buddy in Bloomington and I gave him your son's phone number. They are going to contact him and see what, if anything, they can do. I have my "Fellow Pages" out and there are a bunch of rodders in the 309 area code......

It wasn't that they took my $$. They took my stuff.
I had a truck towed over to the local shop when the trans left. Tow truck driver hollers at me " I locked it up, here's the keys." in front of the manager. Two days later I stop in to see what the verdic is and noticed there was a 2x4 chocking the rear tire. "funny" I thought " the ebrake works and so did the park pall in the trans." I walked over to see that the stereo was missing and so was the new hurst auto shifter, although the cable was still sticking out of the floor. The passengers door was unlocked and neither of the windwindows were broken or open.
I spun around and promptly accused the manager of foul play of one of his employees. He said he wasn't at fault since the truck didn't lock. I reminded him of the truck drivers last words, he looked at me puzzled and sheepish when I stormed out counting to 10. A tech psssst to me, and told me to look in the Ford out back for my stuff. Low and behold there inside the POS was my stuff. Could I prove it? Nope, my word against theirs.
P.S. They fired the honest tech, too.
I HATE AAMCO!!!!!!!
