I thought I'd put a different twist on some recent threads I've seen here, namely money. I relocated last year from L.I. to North east Fl. On L.I. I belonged to a local streetrod club, went to cruise nights, hung out and turned some wrenches with new and old friends. Some of these people have street rod shops or welders, paint and body and interior guys, all are professional and real craftsmen. Some of these people I've known since grade school and I'm in my mid 50's. They all have families with bills to pay and responsibilities and a business to run. These are some of the best people around.............car people, I'm proud to know them and I appreciate them. I have my limits when working on my daily driver or streetrod and just to know a honest person in this field and is good at what they do is a bonus. I feel I'm charge a fair price for some of the services I've asked to have done to my car, I trust them with not only my life but with my families life. I know money is a huge issue to some and times are difficult right now, but there's more going on here than money. I value there opinions and friendships and I pass that along to other people who I've recommended them to. There have been times I've asked for advice (invaluable), had something I just couldn't get right myself, left the car there and asked if they get the time to just look at it and get a call to pick it up........ no charge. I'll go back with lunch, some beers at the end of the day or just hang out if they have time and B.S. It's more than money or the economy or CNN, we're a network of people with a common interest. The almighty buck and current events that are out of my control will never change the way that I feel. To all my old friends on L.I. and the new friends in Fl. I just wanted to let you know I appreciate you and Thanks!

Sach, There are developments in Florida that are like that. When we were looking to build here we found gated communities that wouldn't let you park your truck in the driveway, you couldn't leave your garage door open for more than 30 min. and you couldn't have a dog that weighed more than 20 lbs.! I asked them if they come around and weigh the dogs, or better yet chop it's leg off to bring it back under the limit! Most all of that crap is in the rules the community has set up, that's the first thing we check before we bought the lot and built our home. This is a car friendly community and area, we're gated on a 1 acre lot and 4 car garage, the rules here are easy to live with and some are flexible. The weather Gods have been very kind to us in Northeast Fl., we're from L.I.N.Y and it has got to be one of the most expensive places to live. It's not cheap to live in parts of Florida, but my dollar definetly goes a lot further here. I'd rather be warm than cold and only look at snow storms on tv, glad your happier in your move and best of luck!

After 42 years of working and moving numerous times. I started looking for a place to retire. I ended up retiring in a small town in Northwest Arkansas after what was to be just a visit to a fellow rodder here. The rural environment and cost of living sold me. New house, six-acres and a 40X60 shop for less than a small house in some states. And Arkansas is a car-hobbyist friendly state. I cringe when I read the posts about paperwork/title problems some states generate. The State DMV here goes out of their way to facilitate antique/streetrod registrations and titles. There are three active clubs in this area and a short dinner cruise one night a week. In addition to more than 26 small regional shows in the area, the clubs travel all over the country to various events. People are friendly, always speak when you meet on the street and the local supermarket still has high school kids that carry your groceries to your car. It's a place where the police give you the thumbs-up sign when they pass your streetrod. What's the downside?....summer heat and humidity at times is oppressive. A/C in your cars and shop helps. Overall, a good place to be. And, I just filled my car yesterday with 93 octane for $2.88 a gallon.

My wife and I moved to Florida in 1991, thinking we'd work until retirement, then enjoy the mild weather for the rest of our lives. ( no kids, all grown ) We bought a house in Cape Coral and really enjoyed it the first couple of years. We are both originally from N.Y. state and the climate was nice , in comparerison. Our dream of retiring in Florida, soon became a "dream" and not reality. After be chased out of town twice, with Hurricane threats ( one of which was Andrew ), complaining about all the traffic in the winter time ( due to the annual snow birds coming to town ), the cost of auto, flood and home owners insurance rates, dual water rates, and town restrictions for the home owners, our "dream" soon faded. If you owned a pick-up truck in Cape Coral, it had to be garaged overnight. You could'nt park it in your driveway. This and many other things ended our dreams of retireing in Florida. So after 5 years, we sold our house and moved halfway back to N.Y. We now reside in Virginia and I can park my truck (if I had one ) on the front lawn and let the grass grow around it, if I so desire ! This was our experience with Florida and I'm sure others fell the same. Then, on the otherhand, the Florida "dream", is wounderful and working for other trans plants as well. I know many people that still live in Florida and wouldn't leave if a hurricane blew it off the map. It just didn't work for us. We're happy in Virginia for nine years now and retired for 2 of them.

O2, Love it here, been comeing to St.Augustine for 20 years on vacation and finally talked the wife into makeing the move. L.I. was to congested, something interesting though, it close to 100 degree's and humid in L.I. now, it's cooler here in Fl! We had to put the heat on a few times in January, but we've been blessed by the weather God's so far. Lots of cars stuff here, cruise nights are the best and we're 45min. going to Jacksonville or Daytona by being in the middle and some very friendly car clubs. I didn't make the Turkey run last year because of the move, but will be there this year, the GoodGuys show in Jacksonville was great. Every night here in the North East is cruise night, went to Daytona Harley Davidson and met Mike Lauria from Total Performance, he's adding a huge edition to Harley Davidson for his new streetrod shop. They have a cruise night every 3rd. sat. of the month 6p.m.- ? loaded with bikes and rods and it's the biggest dealership in the country, very impressive.

Crash, going to Jacksonville is as far north as I want to go, can get really busy there. There's a lot of car clubs there and there's a;ways something going on.

I could not agree more. The people on StreetRodding.com who have offered advice (Free) and who are helpful and willing to lend a hand if they can. Those are my Internet friends. The guys who have known me forever at the parts store, the drag strip, the cruise ins, those are friends too! This community of people near and far are the very best.

I agree with both of you. The friends and and people you meet that are part of something, be it a car club, softball team, church group, etc., basically have one thing in common. They joined these groups because they care. Many a time, when help is needed, these groups are the first ones to assist. They do not do it for fame, publicity, money or anything except they care and they were taught right from wrong growing up. There are people with the big bucks who care, but mostly their contribution is cash. Sometimes making money takes time and they can't afford to give time up. The rest of the good ones do what they can. The thing I've always liked about this site is that it has those type of people. Ones who care. I talk this site up when ever I can. Hopefully the ones that come over and stay will be an asset, not an ass! Sorry 'bout that.

In 1990 we sat on 95 in Jacksonville for 9 hours because of an ice storm. My wife and I lived in Bradenton for 13 years and loved it. Only reason we moved back to Va. was because of new born and wifes mother threatened to put a hex on me and make me lose my hair. We moved back and I think she did it anyway.

Bob - you picked a nice area of Florida. It may even bring back some fond memories of L.I. in winter when the temps fall and so does the snow flakes. I have seen flurries as far south as Tampa, and I know Jacksonville sees it occasionally. Good thing is that the cold doesn't last more than a couple of days and the flurries are usually gone in hours. BTW did you get to the Turkey Run last year? You going this year?

Very well said Bob, you are right about the value of friends. Most of the car people that I know care about their friends. My car club recently had a benefit dinner for one of the members whose wife is terminally ill and on a fixed income. When word got around about the dinner, over 500 people from clubs in our section of the state attended and contributed to the silent auction with bids and items for auction. From time to time we should all let our friends know how much we appreciate their friendship.
