Hi fella's,

I have a 78-89 Ford / Lincoln Versailles 9' rear with disc brakes. The emergency brake is hanging up on the drivers side, the lever that the emergency brake cable is attached to on the caliper dosen't return when the brake is operated. The passenger side works OK and feels spring loaded and snaps back into place when the brake is released. I'm not sure how this operates, springs, piston or what? Thanks for any help, Bob

Bob, the rear end you're using requires a 'set-up' procedure to work properly. The rear caliper pistons must be SCREWED to adjust. In order to get the rear brakes and e-brake working follow this set-up. 1) remove the caliper and bottom the piston out into the caliper, 2) install the pads and slip the assembly over the rotor and measure the distance between the pads and the rotor 3) remove the caliper and turn (screw) it out by using the two holes on the piston contact face until you have 1/32nd or less clearance between the pads and the rotor, 4)lock everything down when it just will clear the rotor. The E-brake arm is in the rest position when you can put a 1/8 pin in the back side of the caliper and clear the activiting arm. It should be in about an 8 or 9 o'clock position. If all is set correctly the e-brake arm shouildn't move over 1/2 to 5/8th of an inch to apply. Bleed the brakes carefully as these calipers are prone to air traps.

To get the brakes back up the manual calls for pumping the pedal AT LEAST 40 times prior to driving the car. Good luck

I forgot to mention that these calipers can easily be ruined if the brake is not properly set up. If your e-brake continues to hang, you probably have a piston problem
