Paint Work

Now I know we are all aware of the previous postings about the time and cost of painting a car, especially from the views of our esteemed builders. But I watched a show this weekend that made these guys look like their handy work was a bargain at any price. The show was about a man who restores Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwings and Roadsters. The Gullwings were produced from 1954 to 1957 and sold new for less than $9K. In very good condition today one may sell for $300,000. Now this guy and his staff will take one apart, re-do everything, and put it pact together just as if it was factory fresh. No corners are cut, no expense spared. Total restoration runs upwards of $500,000 and no customer has ever been disappointed. He estimates the cost of paint job alone on one of these cars runs $30 - $40,000.
So next time you hear a pro-builder tell you a really super paint job for your ride will run you $5,000 or more, please don't bitch and moan. Just be thankful you are not restoring a Gullwing, or any other true classic.
ps: Shine can I still get that super $2K paint job for my street heap???? ;-) |
