My old oil lubed air compressor is starting to die. It has been a trusty friend for several decades and was purchased from an industrial outfit no longer around. I am thinking about a new unit that is more portable, 25 - 30 gal. for the limited work I do at home (mechanical, light painting, and buffing). I figure something with 5.0 - 7.0 scfm @ 90 psi or better will do the job. I have seen them ranging from 135 to 175 psi and oil lubed and oil free. . Would an oil lubed compressor be better than an oil free unit? Is it better to get one with a high cfm @90 psi even though the max psi may only be 150 or 135psi, or should I shoot for max psi even though cfm may be less?

Comments or recommendations appreciated.

Thanks.

5 hp, 80 gal tank will run any paint gun, or buffer. dont fall for the 6 hp thing at walmart and such. it's a 3 hp with double starters.

if your using a hvlp gun you will probably need at least 10 to 15 cfm of air my sata's take about 12 to 15cfm. if your using an air polisher or a grinder the more cfm the better and it'll even make your grinding discs last longer. if not doing much painting smaller compressor will work fine, running low on cfm while painting will give you some very nasty orange peel and sags because it doesn't atomize the paint properly to lay down flat. hope that this helps

if steelwool is real steel, do they make fiberglass reproductions?

Shine, be glad you are where the humidity isn't bad, I had to drain even my filter 3 times today{ high dollar Sharpe unit} and my compressor twice. What a pain.

ARE YOU KIDING. THE HUMIDITY HERE DRIVES ME NUTS SOMETIMES. I HAVE A PISS DRAIN ON MY COMPRESSOR AND JUST LEAVE IT OPEN FROM LATE SPRING TO FALL.

I'm just like Toby Keith. He loves his bar and I love this place. Start with a simple subject and then go all over the map with answers. Does it get any better than this. Thanks for the help, guys. Think I will get mine fixed and move it in to the shed. Then go buy a new 60 gal oil lubed twin cylinder pumping about 11-12 cfm for the garage. Plan to tell the wife the old one just couldn't handle my future needs. Don't know if she will believe it. But that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Shine's probably right on this. One thing to consider though - if you plan on ever painting w/ an HVLP gun, you might want to check the minimum SCFM requirements - I believe you'll find the 5-7 scfm you mentioned won't get it...

My compressor sets in the cornor of the shop and grinds away without me giving it so much as a drain every once in a while. When it started to slow down I finally had to do something. After finding the filter was CLOGGED I called the company and got several more. They gave me the specs for 0-130 lbs and 80-130. Would you believe it was on the money! Bottom line is fix it if you can.

orphin, trust me on this. my compressor was bought in 83. it went tru a flood and still worked 2 years. new electric motor and away it went. had the pump rebuilt 6 years ago. no need to replace everything, just fix it. unless you just got the hots for a new one

my compressor is one of my tools. i change the oil twice a year and put a new air filter on each year in the spring. as a painter i have to stay hip on this as a wornout comp will cantaminate my air lines. i use pvc so if i start getting oil in my traps in the booth i can saw it up and put new lines in. i use a GOOD water trap and a tolit paper filter.
