I have a 2001 chevy 4wd pickup and yesterday it started to squeak and vibrate...I thought it was a u-joint going out....nothing major/easy fix. Now comes the strange part...the u-joints are ok but a mechanic friend of mine told me that there's an insert in the new driveshafts and that mine is beginning to "separate"...I have never heard of this but he swears it's pretty common. Has anybody else seen or heard of this happening????

If my memory serves me correctly, I have seen driveshafts with an insert inside them that looked like a tube of heavy corrugated cardboard. I was told that its purpose was to deaden the tinny sound that was made by loose stones or gravel striking the driveshaft.

Well I pulled the shaft and the front u-joint was almost locked up...I guess I should grease those things more than once every 100K miles.

I ran across the same thing when I shortened the vette half shafts for my 29. Does just what Brian says. Big thick toilet paper tube on steriods. Noise deadener. Don't know what would be cheaper, Have a drive shaft shop seperate it and replace it or just get another one.
