After having read the article in "Street Scene" in the April 2006 issue in the Safety First collum about the effects of gasoline-ethanol fuels on rubber fuel hoseI begane to wonde. Then I read the article in "Popular Mechanics " May 2006 issue on "The truth about bio fuels "Which talked aboutcorrosion of metals from the fuel tank to the carb or injectors. It mentioned stainless steel plastic. Can any one shed some light on this.I would think the rodders in the upper mid-west must be familiar. Thanks for any advice......Al

I've run the stuff. I have a blown and injected smallblock in my pickup. Its a 72 and has the original motor still. I had to step the mixture up two steps, but man what a great runner. The stuff is 40% cleaner burning and burns completely unlike gas. True you have to burn more, but it burns more of it so you really don't lose any fuel milage. At least I didn't notice a change. Not to mention the octane is higher and it makes more power, that is if your engine is built for it and can take advantage. Smells cool, just like a car on .............alcohol...

The biggest problem when switching to the ethanol blend is it may cut loose the gunk in your fuel tank. We have been using the blend for several years in tractors, four wheelers, cars and trucks with no noticeable problems except for fuel filters for a short time mostly with the older stock vehicles.

I will start planting corn in the the morning but mine is headed for Japan to make beer!

Thanks 72 Cheyenne,So far it sounds good.Nobody has mentioned anything about rubber fuel hoses deteriating or corrosion of metal in the fuel system yet.In my area,South Jersey, they are gong to be comming out with summer blend gas.It will be gasohol instead of MTBE mixed in with the gas.

Exactly, moon shine. Runs cooler, yes. I haven't had trouble with the metal so far or rubber hoses, I am running fuel injection hose though and some stuff good to 350psi. I kicked the timing up a few degrees an no pinging even under boost.

Traction is a main concern though......

Al, there are issues with the use of ethanol fuel mixes, with 5% to 10 % ethanol ratios used from time to time you should not have any problems. When the percentage of ethanol get up to the 85% which is the case with E-85 fuel, that when the fun begins. Do not use E-85 fuel in a vehicle that is not designated as a flex fuel vehicle. My experience is primarily with valve train components and the effect of E-85 on valves and valve seats is severe wear. This because the E-85 fuel does not provide lubricity between the valve and the valve seat on both the intake and the exhaust. During numerous engine dyno tests with E-85 fuel after 50 hours you can smell the ethanol in the engine oil.

The other great thing is that the fuel efficiency of E-85 about 25% to 35% lower than gasoline. So 21 mpg becomes 14.7 mpg and it costs more that gasoline in most locations. It great if you are a farmer with 2,000 acres of corn.

I personally try to avoid it when ever possible.

Ken

You know you guys got me thinkin about switchin the Camaro to Corn....I live in Illinois shoot we have corn growing where we don't want it! I sure could use a break on the gas prices some how. I figure she gets 10 miles to the gallon....if I keep my foot out of it and we all know that won't happen...

Alcohol's all I ran the last 20 years I raced. Love it. If you run too much it is corrosive. Not sure about it when it is mixed with gas. Farmer, keep planting and maybe we can run corn and starve the towel heads and oil crooks.

Thanks Ken.My concern will be when MTBE is finally replaced with gasohol. So with infreqent use of a stree rod compared with a daily driver, gasohol should be no problem. You have proved Al And Eriq's point that you can't get better advice any where, thanks again. Al
