I read an article in the newspaper the other day about Ford saying that after 6 years of normal use the tires should be replaced.Does any one have any ideas on this ?

A safety message from Ford, mfg. of the infamous "Tommy Tip Over" Ford Exploders, pertaining to tires.
WOW.......now that takes some b...s!
Did the article relate at all to replacing Firestone tires on Fords??????????
Excuse me, but I think I'll leave my trust on tire advise to a more reputable source.
Interesting thing about Bill Ford,CEO of Ford Motor Company. His Father is William Clay Ford,Grand Son of Hernery Ford. His Mother is the Grand duaghter of Harvey firestone. His Mother was Martha Firestone before She Married William Clay Ford.Henery Ford and Harvey Firestone where buddys.......Al C
I read something on this a while ago. Two issues were mentioned. One was that it is difficult to tell the true manufacturing date of some tires. "New" tires on the rack at many dealers are actually as much as 8 years old, even if they just got them yesterday. The second issue was due to the degeneration of the rubber and belts over time, especially periodically if run at high temperature (due to speed or air temp, or both). Treads and belts can de-laminate.
Some additional imfo from the article.Ford's comments in depth can be found at ford.com .The foreign makers such as VW,BMW,Toyota,Daimler Chrysler and Gm in Europe have these warning in their owners manuals. Also the tire industry says they can not come up with an exact age limit for when they should be replaced.I replaced my Goodyear Wranglers on my old Jeep Cherokee because pof the cracks or dry rot.The tread still had some life to it.......Al C

What about the antique racers that have to have the old tires on their bonnivile cars, they are always looking for the old speed tires and going out and running 200+?
Pay attention to what they are saying. I manage a large fleet, tires are the biggest expence next to fuel. I have spent alot of time and research into tires and tire failures. 6 years is a good rule of thumb, beyond that the tire is on borrowed time. not worth the risk. if you can see weather checking your way past borrowed time, your days are limited. you understand things better when you see old weathered tires blowup that are just sitting parked in the yard.
Here's some more things from the article. They have an explanation and drawing of the markngs on the tire. They have a manufactures code starting with DOT followed by letters indicating what plant they where made in.Now we have "final digits of manufacturers code tell when tire was made;0800on the tire in the drawing means eighth week of 2000 ".Next, "Sean Kane has petioned the NHTSA for easy to read tire age label.Kane, the president of SRS inc,A Massachusetts auto safety research firm.......Al C
We have a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer (nearly same as an Explorer), and all of the Firestone tires were replaced shortly after purchase with Goodyear Wrangler RT/S. The vehicle has about 25K miles on it and all of the tires are developing very fine crack lines on the sidewall. They might be find for casual use, but all will be change out before any long trips or towing. My thinking is that they should have lasted alot longer than they have.
Al, did you replace your Wranglers with new ones, or did you go to a different brand? Sounds like the cracking problem is the same, mine still have 70% tread life left.
Orphans2,I replaced with same.Tiny cracks that look like dry rotin the tread. The only reason I use Goodyears for the daily driver is because they are everywhere. When the Jeep cherekee was 6 mounths old it was hit in the left front.Aside from the body work the OEm michelin was destroyed. It took almost 3-mounths to get a replacement. The Michelin was a great tire. But on a daily driver,I can't put up with that.So I looked for a widely available brand and Goodyear looked like the on.......Al C
