Let me rephrasethis, has any on installed ,driven or knows some one that has please comment on the Flaming River variable pressure power rack and pinion steering ? I can't find anybody whohas.Flaming River must be selling them ! .......Al C
I installed one of these & I'm very happy with it. Remeber that the rack diameter is larger on the PS rack & this can create clearance problems with the harmonic balancer. Also the steering shaft bolted up to the FR rack further out, away from the motor than w/my old rack. I used a double shafted U joint w/two supports but eventually went to block hugger headers (from Rams Horn) to get the shaft to align properly.
Thanks,acr3.Thanks for the advice, glad to hear you are satisfied with it.Hows the varable power part of it ? How firm does the steering get at speed ? ......Al C
The PS is installed in a '36 Plymouth 2 dr. Sedan. I've driven the car very little on the hi-way since the PS install, mostly in town. Before that it was a fine on the hiway but a BEAR in parking & tight turns. After the PS install I did drive it to the NSRA SE Nats in Tampa, FL, about 60 mi on I-4. Steering response was very good, not twitchy like some have described other PS units. Right now the car is "under constuction", getting a new 350 SBC. While that is going on I'm replacing the "convoluted double shafted u-joint,then single u joint, two support bearing set up" that was necessary w/the Rams Horn exhaust manifolds. Using block hugger headers, I'll have a much straighter shot to the steering shaft w/only one support bearing & one u joint between the firewall & the rack. This change alone should make a big difference. FWIW & as expected, the best change was tight turns in & out of places like parking spots. They're a breeze now & well worth the cost.

early yesterday morning i went to get the alignment. did'nt get it because their computer was down. on the way back i met an old woman in my lane trying to pass. she mirrored my moves and folowed me to the shoulder and then back into the lane. my last resort was to get across all lanes to the opposite shoulder . this all happened at 60. i'll say this, i put the car in as close to max as possible. tires squeeling and almost sideways. it handled well considering the alignment was only guessed at. the steering is a little stiff parking but ok on the road. i plan to get it aligned tomorow morning. if i dont die i'll let you know how it handles.

no, she was head on with me. she thought she was in the climing lane i guess. she paniced and mirrored my moves. my first thought was no seat belts and closing at 120 with a 6k lb tuna boat. had i went to the shoulder again i would not be posting today.

the flaming river rack seems to be a little better. probly had some air in it. still not what i like for parking but should be ok. i prefer the camaro clip and steering. i'm just not the rack and pinon type i guess.

I notice that someone is selling a Chevy P/S pump that they say is the correct pressure for the MII rack. It's even chrome plated.I wonder if this is realy the way to go for Mustang II power steering rack & pinion ?
