I am not sure about Illinois in general but we do have the cold weather to contend with. It is too cold, rainy, or snowy about 4 months out of the year. As for the cops....well there sure are alot of them in Lincoln's home state. They have been known to pull you over just to look at your car and that can be flattering if you don't have a stroke before they tell you that they aren't writing you a ticket. My husband was stopped one day and said he couldn't figure out what he did wrong. There was one patrol car and one undercover. They both said "We just wanted to tell you to take it easy and get a look at your ride. Tickets around here are $75.00 to start so that was quite a relief! What are moving violations costing in your area?

I live in southern Indiana, which is beautiful country, rolling hills and green. I'm about 15 minutes from Louisville where the NSRA Nat's are being held for a ten year period. In Indiana there are many events including GoodGuy's and Super Chevy at Indianapolis Raceway Park, James Dean Run and numerous smaller runs. I've lived in both Kentucky and Indiana where police and DMV problems are nonexistent, no harrassment or registration problems. Both Kentucky and Indiana are streetrod country. The only problem is the winter which lasts about 4-5 month's.

PA has a lot of rodders, rodding vendors and shows. The DMV has finally seen the light and has made fenderless, bumperless, and hoodless rods street legal, so it is getting better. Cops usually don't hassle rodders, unless the rodders are wheel squeeling idiots.

Never lived in Indiana, but have heard the police there don't have a high regard for street rodders. Once heard that the police even ticketed rodders at a car show that benefited the local FOP. If true they sure had some dim bulbs on that force.

Southern Ontario has little or no hassles, with only a ten minute drive to New York I have the best of both worlds. My calendar shows at least 5 to 7 cruise nights every day of the week, all within 50 miles. On average there are several car shows within a hundred miles every weeekend from May to late September. 3 hours to Syracuse (6000 cars) 5 hours to Columbus( Goodguys) Our local large cruise nights average 150 to 250 cars. Winters are bearable and give you time to build. Western New York and North West PA are great for Sunday drives. My all time favorite run was "The Best run by a dam site" in Meadville, PA. The host club provided great barbeque and all day games for everyone, only 100 pre 48 cars, nice and cosy

Still driving the wife's car, cause I am slow. [ View ] [ Email ] [ Blogs ] [ Car Ads ] Niagara Falls, Canada Charter Member since February 2005

I live in Illinois, my area has cruise nights in different nearby towns every day during the week in the warmer weather. I've been to a lot of shows in Indiana and Michigan and have never been hasseled by the police.

Don't get me wrong Brian, I don't think they hassle you for fun or anything. It is just the old drag racing jitters seeing those lights in the mirror I guess. I personally have only ever had one ticket and that was 19 years ago. I did talk my way out of a drag racing ticket once but we won't count that. It just seems like Illinois has alot of officers on patrol. I do however live in the capital city and with the opening of the Lincoln Presidential Library they have increased the number of State Police. On any given day I can drive past 5 state, 2 county and 5 or 6 city officers. I bet Shine doesn't see that many in a month!

I have never done any NJ shows but my car club buddies do the boardwalk show in Wildwood every year. Macungie in PA and Cruisin OC are two good close shows. There are a lot of small shows in this area of PA every week plus the KKOA show in Gettysburg and the South Mountain Rod Run. Plus we got the Carlisle shows, which are fairly large. Shows and rod runs start early April and end in November, with one exception and that is the Mid Atlantic Indoor Nationals in December in Maryland. After that it is just snow and cold and wishing for Spring.

Probably being any place in the South is better than being in the North. Lucky suckers down south can do rod runs all year. After I retire I'm moving to Dixie. Fun, sun and rod runs.

Southern Nevada, great place for Streetrodding.Something always going on,weather's friendly,(great for open cars.) Never had any problems with the law or DMV. Lots of small clubs/ groups/shows/cruise's. Many shops, but I personaly have no experience with any of them. Traffics a bear, air is almost mandatory, insurance high, why I moved to North Idaho,(But I'm going back this weekend!!)

yeah, Gman, I saw Deliverance many moons ago. Know the feeling too, especially after having the rod breakdown enroute to Lou'ville in 2002 near Moorehead on I 64, middle of nowhere, after dark, no lights, strange noises coming from the woods on the other side of the hiway, and with luck one good samaritan. Born a redneck with webs between my toes, I usually get along well with country folk. My wife's side of the family are from western PA, whole bunch of ridge runners. Dixie will do just fine.

Ahotrod33, there's a hog farm down on 851 right off I 83, when you come to York, maybe I can arrange a tour for you and the missus. Whole lot of squealing going on.. ;-)

Donl, I've been to southern Nevada and have to admit I liked it alot. Could be a tad bit cooler, and not crazy about it when it rains hard. Not good when the waves are splashing over the cowl of the streetrod.

O2--don't need a tour. Used to live about 1.5 miles from a hog farm when I lived in South Jersey. On a hot/humid day the smell was so bad your eyes would water.

Florida is not good. First, no snow so you will have to miss some show or other in order to take the rod down for overhaul/redo. There are no cops here in Fla...at least I have not seen one on the road in the last year. This causes lots of problems at lights and stop signs. Some do, some don't stop. You're on your own. Daytona. The infield is too big and the 5000 cars are way to many to see. Four days of walking and you will just cover the swap meet, never mind the cars and the cars for sale. Rain. Pro street and a Fla gully washer equals a trip to the canal. Got a hell of a sun burn on my legs in the roadster just going to the Space Coast one year. Want to go to a show in another state? Six hours or more just to get out of Fla. and that's not across the panhandle which nobody has found the end off yet!

Willys, you're breaking my heart. I just don't what to do about not having snow every morning from January thru February. And I sure will miss not having the bare trees in December and a non-white Christmas. But you know, some time you just got to make sacrifices for the little woman. It will be rough, but I'll try real hard not to pine over all those wonderful things about the frozen north.

Also, been doing the Turkey Run since '97 and you're right 5000 cars is just too many to see in only 4 days. Not much different than the York Nats and the5-6000 that show up there for three days and just as warm. Only difference is that the York Nats are in June not November.

Hey Willys, Rhobyn and I lived in Manatee co (Bradenton) for 12 years and the thing I liked most was that the cars the cops got from drug dealers were turned in to police cars, It was odd to see Camaros, Mercedes, SUVs painted and striped with blue lights on top. Didn't make our taxes any less but it looked cool.

Idaho, man, Idaho. The DMV loves old cars an will bend over backwards to get one titled. Got some great rod shops up here and some not so good, too. Lots of hot rods, drag racing, snow, rain, sun, mountains, lakes, rivers, great fishing, hunting and lots of trees. We are close to Reno too, the Portland swap meet and Bonneville. Best of all, we're far enough away from the wierdos in Texas........hehehe:}

Sometimes, the cops will pull me over just to look at my vehicle..... something about hearing a baby crying.....probable cause, whatever that is....-Brant

In response to your request of info about shows: Shades of the Past in Pigeon Forge Tenn. is a good show. The poeple that put it on are great and they give away prizes, including 2 streetrods. However, the town of Pigeon Forge has gotten tired of us streetrodders , apparently, they are trying to make us feel unwelcome and are doing a good job of it by a lot of police stops and high prices,( food, motels, etc.) I guess they don't appreciate our money.

I would agree that we have more than our share of police, and some of them do need a new hat size when they put on the badge, but I've found that if your driving normal most of them will give you a smile and a wave. Your right though when you say seeing them in the rearview gets your heart pumping a little faster.

O2's area of PA is a great place for cruizin. Something going on every weekend and some week nights as well. Never had any real issues from the police unless you were lighting up the tires to the point of being crazy. Inspection rules here for rods are the same as daily drivers with new exception of bumpers and fenders but you don't have the emissions part.. Phila area has fewer cruizes but still not bad. Nats East & Macungie, are great events, and now Good Guys in Hershey will probably be added to the list. Driving season is the real problem cause of the crappy weather. Phila area has the additional problem with totally riduculous traffic problems.

Lived in Indianapolis most of my life, and had closed cars and open cars. Usually don't have much trouble with the law, unless you got it coming ! Most of the time they will give you a thumbs up, when they pull up next to you. We have the fender, bumper and bumper height laws, but rarely inforced. Titles are not any problems, just a slow and patients testing ordeal. We have more problems with the burners and tuners, than anything else. Have about four months of good cruzin and three of so so, then bedtime for five months. We have Greedguys in Indy and James Dean up north, and Louisville Nat's and Frog Follies down south. No good street rod shops around anymore, most everything is mail order. What few there are, never have anything or really know what's going on. Best part is getting up early on Saturday for breakfast with the guys, and then the back road runs to a smaller show. This weekend is Winchester Speedway at the Ohio state line, really looking forward to sunshine and 70's and 400 cars. We get five or six laps around the worlds fastest half mile 33 degree banked track, which is awsum in a hot rod.....

Up here in the Boston area there are cruise nights somewhere seven days a week. There is always somewhere to go. We only have a six month season but that only adds to the anticipation of the start of the season. I'm going to the first show/flea market of the season Sunday. My car is going thru a complete rehab right now so I have to wait till June to enjoy the thrill again but I'm sure the wait is going to be worth it.

Prorod, Welcome aboard. Good to have you hear, just don't make rubbing it in about Florida's great weather and all year rodding a habit. I anticipate living there in a few years cause most of the family is there now (Dade City/Tampa). I hear about Florida weather from them and Willys33 enough already.

Oh, and one more thing if you go crusing in Texas, remember if you have a nice rod, don't go near Bluff Dale otherwise your rod may not be your rod for long. Them old porch dogs chase wheels all day and all night. (hehehhe)

I think the cops in Kentucky are pretty tolerant. At the Nats in Lou-a-vul, on Fri n Sat nite it's cruise time and crowds show up to watch the "parade" on Cannon's Lane in front of the State Fairgrounds, and even though a few fellers probably deserve a ticket for showing off, I've never seen one written.

And at Somernites (Somerset Ky), there have been a number of cars show up with open headers (one radical rod with zoomies, no less) and I've yet to see a ticket written.

And I've been given the thumbs up a number of times by johnny law.

As for weather, I'd guess that half of the year is decent enough here to go cruising, and we take some day trips during the winter, on sunny days.

As for titling and registration, I've only heard of a couple of cases where someone was questioned and they came to a compromise on the cars value for tax purposes.

kentucky has some beautiful country i hope to go tobowling green this year to hot rod reunion heard great things about it. must be nice cruising thru the mountains especially in a roadster. been to gatlinburg and piegon forge a lot. couple of years ago had street rod show one weekend and street machine show next weekend crowded but lots of nice cars. at street machine weekend we saw them grabbing and towing off a lot of cars for parking in wrong areas. this was to much so we left. don t worry i never brag about floridas weather i ve been here since 59 and its stillto hot to me. think i will stay out of shady parts of texas is that place close to mexico? cops down here are getting a little hard on everybody because the puerto ricans and their 4 bangers want to use all our streets for racing which causes a lot of accidents etc and really ticks off the cops. a friend of mine took off from light without squelling tires no one else around and got 800.00 ticket for racing, hesaid racing who myself no one else was there went to court still had to pay. daytona cops seem the worst to me they have only one idea and thats to ticket you. little things you can ge away with like noise etc. just be cool and they will leave you alone. one of ou best get togethers is at race rock the thursday before street nationals. these are 6 7 8 9 second machines that they cruise down international dr have a good party and than go racing friday thru sunday. the cops stop regular traffic to let them in and out and some are known to do burn outs when leaving, its o k unless the crowds get to crazy
