I purchased a new Tuffstuff gear reduction starter and it came with four shims. On start up the starter doesn't completely disengage as quickley as I would like. When the engine is running the flex plate just touches the drive gear.

You can get a shim pac at your local discount auto store. The instructions are in there. Go by a repair shop and ask if they saved the instructions from the last starter job. Shims can be added to both holes or only one hole depending on weather you need to move the starter closer or further away from the flex plate/flywheel. Some kits even supply a feeler gauge. A paper clip will also work to adjust the space between the starter and flex gears. Don't do this with the battery hooked up. Draw the starter gear out 'till it engages the slex gears and adjust as necessary with shims. If you leave the battery connected you may have problems picking your nose afterward. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I'm still not back on the road. when I did my initial fluid check I found water in the oil. Cracked block in the lifter valley 8 inches long. I bought a new Dart block and will try to use the starter as is because of the block change. I'll post the outcome. Thanks again. lyled

add shims one at a time until starter engages and disengages smoothly and as quietly as possible
