It goes even deeper than aftermarket car parts, although there have been knock-offs (even with Ford's script) made in Southeast Asia for years. The scrap metal industry in the US has become nearly monopolized by dealers selling to China and the Chinese themselves. They do not have much, if any, raw material, so they are buying all of the scrap metal they can get. The industries are being flooded with fabricated and cast components made in China. Why?, you may ask. It is because their labor force is paid so very little, manufacturer's here in the US can buy their parts cheaper than they can be made domestically. Another way to put it is that the Chinese can buy material (scrap) from the US, ship it overseas, sort, melt, and fabricate into usable material cheaper than the same component made domestically.

Having worked in both the manufacturing industy (16 years) and the sales business (12 years) it has become a "fact of life". All it takes is one manufacturer out-sourcing (the P.C. term) of their parts to lower their cost and all of their competitors must do the same to keep up.

The bay bridge in Boston, which was repalced three years ago, was purchased by the Chinese even before the new one was even started. They wanted the steel.

I've got a better idea, how about the Koreans just shipping their cars to China for melt-down instead of ruting them through the US for a couple of years. They are throw-away vehicles any way. Right?

Wonder how long before they become known as Chinese Racing Wheels?

Pistolpete13, there are a lot of throw away cars, not just the Korean. In fact many Hyundai models are now recommended by Consumer Reports right up there with the Hondas and Toyotas. Other than Hyundai most others are junk. Although American jobs may not build them, they sell them, repair them and crush them. There are junkers sold by Japs, Europeans and American car companies. Hell, reliability wise, Mercedes is one of the worse.

Take them back, tell the dealer you don't want and didn't pay for Chinese wheels. Write a letter to the manufacturer also. Boys and girls, the only way we're going to stop this stuff is to refuse to accept it as a way of life. The best way we can voice ourselves is to vote (or not vote) with our dollars. I'll get off my soapbox now....

I'd like to put in my two cents. We manufacture cutting tools. We bid on a tool for cutting sheet metal. 3 flute- 3/16" dia. It is made to drill a hole and then cut sideways. Used in an electric drill. We bid 3.90 ea. making 45,000 pcs a year. We got beat out by the chinese with a bid of .93 ea. Of course they didn't work. we now have 15,000 of them laying in our shop to be modified. This didn't work because the steel wasn't up to snuff. Anyone need some 3/16" chinese drills. The company that had them made, said throw them away. Enough said!

In yesterdays Detroit News on the front page. A story about a chinese car going to be sold here for ten thousand dollars. It said the chinese(not capitalized on purpose, Im not known for being politically correct. I don't give a crap!)) can build a car for $3.50 an hour. Whereas an American car cost about $73 an hour. If I could pass a law. It would never be let in our country.

Don't take this the wrong way guys, but Americans are notorious for not knowing much about the rest of the world. You are discovering the tip of the iceberg. It's been going on for many, many years and in more ways than you dare imagine. Ask your politicians why they treat you like mushrooms. But don't believe the answer.

I hate politics and don't want to go down that road, but that and $ is the root. No one will dare "offend" the Chinese while they will make and do stuff for cents an hour, with virtual slave labor and no health and safety precautions. On the other side they also dangle the carrot of "we'll open up our market to you..." They know they hold the cards. And a billion + people.

These days, you choose made in Japan if you can. Most Japanese brands (of anything) aren't actually made in Japan - because it's too expensive. They manufacture in China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and South Korea. Did I leave some out? Oh Vietnam and India (where half the world's total supply of computer nerds come from).

One good thing though, Rodders Journal is printed in Asia so we get it before you guys do. He he!

Sometimes we have to look to ourselves for why? Since we rebuilt Japan after WWII our country has bee in the nation building business. We have taken our technology, education, food and politics around the world to improve those less fortunate. We could debate the "real reason" but lets say many people have better lives because of it. I hate to see jobs leave with our industrial base and I beleive it will bad for us in the future. However, most of us have nice homes, a couple of cars and plenty to eat because of what we sent around the world.

My business rises and falls with China today, a few years ago it was Russia and of course there is Brazil. My costs are all up because of global competition to feed the growing population. China wants steel... equipment prices are up, China needs fertilizer nitogen goes up you get the picture.

So I do like everyone in business does adapt, change look for another angle and be damn glad sombody has the money to buy what I have to sell. Oh and get up every day and be glad I can complain about hw bad it here in the US ....

tiraid over..... soap box smashed.

This may be a little off the subject but.....tell me why GM and other car manufacturers are not producing the things we are best at. Style!!!

I would spend the extra money to have a mini van that looks like something cool and not a box with wheels. I would pay a little more for a truck with some looks. Those little PT cruisers are selling like hot cakes around here and the new Chevy is moving off the showrooms. Why not build cars that look like the ones we all love?

I saw a show the other night that said the top 4- selling cars in the U.S. are made in Japan.

Can you say NISSAN--HONDA--TOYOTA Ford and GM are laying off 30,000 people each this month. Next time you pull up to a stop light, Look Around and count them, There just like Wal-Mart "Everywhere" Thats not their fault, Face the facts, They do it cheaper than the US can. Thats what made Wally World the largest employer in the country. The Trade Deficit was the worst in history last month. Atleast until December numbers come out. Americans want to pay half price for things and expect them to last for ever. Do you remember financing your first Micro-Wave, Most people had to, Now like so many other things, They are Disposable. And Damn few if any are made in the US Just in my office, The computer screen, TV, Fax, Phone, Printer, My cigarette lighter and even my Stapler are not made in the US and They are all trash when they quit working, You just go get another one, My wifes new printer cost less than the ink cartridges for mine. So what do you do?? Impose Teriffs and taxes on these imported items, Who do you think will scream louder, The Japaneese or the Americans that like these low cost items that only they seem to be able to produce and ship direct to Wal-Mart. Are our elected officials blind,Stupid, or just don't give a damn. I am so tired of this catch 22 phrase "Politically Correct" It along with the death of "Common Since" in this country has gone way to far. You can sit there and say we build a better car than they do, If you think that, Do Not Pass Go--Do Not Collect $200.00 Read the top of this post again, The top 4-selling cars in this country are made in japan. Do you remember thinking--Man that 64 Chevy is sweet, Check out the lines on that 68, Look at the crap out there right now and tell me who made it, Or what is it??Truck Car Van???I have no idea. How many models did GM make this year??35-40 I don't believe they remember any of their own History. Sorry I got side-tracked. This all got started by reading one comment, You have got to Vote and hold these scum bags responsible for their actions, Or lack of. If the Japs want to export 10-million cars this year, Fine, Then you import 10-million from here, Sounds simple just tell us what colors,Hell, we don't know what they are either. I know so many people that say they just don't get involved with politics, I'm here to tell you that has got to change, I can speak a few words in spanish but I ain't never gonna catch on to this jibberish these boys speak

RLP-----thinking that Quarter he spent in French was a poor decision!!!

Gentlemen, as an independant parts retailer I can tell you why so many things are made over seas, Americans won't pay the cost of American made goods !@!! Plane and simple. I try my best to stock and sell American products for a number of reasons not the least of which is quality. But when I attend a swap meet or show and set up my wares, the first thing a hear is " hey the guy down the isle has them alot cheaper!" Of course his are all imported cheap copies and won't hold up but hey they're cheaper!! A thousand times a week end we hear the same thing, "I want the cheapest I can get" or something to that affect. Even when I try to show and explain the difference in my American parts, they usually buy from the other guys cheap stuff. We will continue to handle as many made in the USA peices as I can, but to survive I must also carry some lesser stuff in order to have any business at all. Its just the way it is in the good ole USA !!

i can not believe a r are now made in china. i wanted a set for 64 nova in place of welds on there now,but not anymore. a friend came over the other week and was sitting in the nova and said man when was the last time you ever saw a metal dash! this surprished me until i started thinking about it.when i wrecked a vette a few years back on way home from work, i had at least 3 co-workers tell me i should buy a lexus,i told them nicely i would never own a toyota,none of them new toyota built lexus. ihave never bought a forgion car but i have never bought a brand new car either. wife bought new 94 chevy ex-cab truck, still has it still loves it,around 190,000 miles. only replaced water pump, maybe alternater,battery, front 2 shocks and muffler. rest is stock,it is a mark 3.ask her if she plans on trading for 4 door truck anytime soon, said no still loves truck,will put in crate motor. u.s. needs to get off their butts and build better cars,peoplewill buy them even if they cost a little more but only if built good.maybe they saw this all coming when they started buying into forgien car manufactirys.when i go to car shows,etc and the guy says these wheels,etc are imported i will not but them period. some stuff the guy might say is all imported than you might have to. i live in florida,seems i hear more jibberish than english. i look at everything i buy to see where it comes from, seeing more made in china less made in usa.

I thought this was fitting.....

All American Christmas

An all-American Christmas is hard to have today

with all the foreign imports that are packed in Santa's sleigh.

The toys all come from China, most clothes are from there too;

it makes me wonder if his elves have anything to do.

The trees all come from Canada, the trimmin's from Taiwan;

as I read tags where things are from, I'm thinkin' something's wrong!

The coat I bought for hubby was made in Bangladesh;

his Wranglers from Korea...from the Japanese, his vest.

And what was worse, I went to buy the food for Christmas Day;

the turkeys that I sorted through had come from Uraguay.

The hams, they came from Mexico, the coffee from Brazil;

that's where all the nuts came from ..except for Uncle Bill!

There's fruitcake made in Germany, the rum is from there too;

(perhaps that is the reason why poor Grandpa got the flu)

The lutefisk came from Norway, it smelled like something dead;

the English and the Irish were the ones who made the bread.

Then I got to thinkin' that we'd just go out to eat,

but all the fast-food joints serve the foreign kind of meat.

There's Mexican, Italian, and cafes that are Chinese;

and even goat meat featured in those restaurants from Greece.

Everything's from somewhere else, I'll tell you folks, it's sad

that an All-American Christmas is so hard to be had.

But from these foreign imports, if you'd like to find relief,

just go down to your grocery store and buy American Beef

Hey guys, if you can stand another thought or two on the 'made in America' discussion.....

In a younger day I worked in three different American car dealerships as a detail/get ready guy etc. One task I dreaded was having to get a car in off the lot for prep during winter. This always involved jumper cables, cans of ether, and the Popes blessings to get the things running then keep them running long enough to drive them in. Spit, pop. cough, stall, then start over.

I then got a job at a Toyota dealership. I had never been around anything foreign before, and didn't know what to expect, except more of the same. What a surprise! I would go to cars that had sat for months-hit the key and wham! Instant start, and the things would sit there and purr like a sewing machine-in single-digit temps! I couldn't believe it!

Next, I would see cars come in for mileage-interval service with 150k on the odometer and you couldn't hear the things run if you were 20 feet away! Amazing!

I was sold easily. I've owned two Toyota trucks and one car since and would never go back. These cars are by the way made here in the good old USA, in factories which employ thousands of our countrymen.

I know it's a sin whats happening to the US makers, but over the years they've brought it all on themselves. I know that in recent years there have been some improvements, but in years past they were making real crap. There was no comparison in quality. Still isn't for my money. The Japs knew we would pay for the quality, and they provided it. Can't blame them. Corporate America asked for this, big-time.

I don't have the answer to the trade deficit, etc., but I know that paying out my hard-earned dollars for crap doesn't ring true to me.

Here we go again, Years ago I ran a small engine shop in Florida. Briggs/Stratton, Tecumseh, Wisconsin. All sold ok until Honda entered the market. They all almost went under until they could revamp their quality standards. I don't think they have ever caught back up. I think people want to buy American but economics and income make it hard to.

Besides my old Chevy hotrod, I hadn't owned an American made vehicle in 25 years, until 1999 when I bought a Chevy pickup. It sure looked slick, but I had problems within 6 months and GM would not fix it, said it was normal. Sure enough, other manual shift trucks that I drove had a similar problem. After messing with GM for over a year and no satisfaction, I sold the truck at a loss, with only 5900 miles. And wouldn't you know it, 2 or 3 months later I got a letter from GM announcing a fix. Too late. I won't be back, especially since GM vehicles now have OnStar, and their trucks now are 6 lug. What the hell are they thinking? I wanna buy American, but something's gotta change.

I hate to hear this about American Racing. I'm going to let em know how I feel when I attend car shows. I wanted to buy a set before warm weather returns, but now I won't.

It really does not matter to me if foreign auto manufacturers have factories in this country, the profits go to Japan. The reasons they built these factories is mainly to get around the 75% domestic content law,and also to be closer to the u.s. market. Honda came to Ohio about 15 or so years ago.They received a huge roll back in taxes for locating here.Then smaller companies started showing up in other small cities & towns to supply Honda,all different names. Well guess what? They are Honda owned. I just read in the paper a new asian company wants to locate in a town about 9 miles from where i live.They wanted a100% roll back on taxes for 30 years.The town gave them 75%, 25% will be paid to the school system.This ticks me off since the american industry we still have, gets taxed at the regular rate. One other item, they say american labor cost too much. If this is so then why is Honda able to export their Ohio built cars. I think american auto makers should get rid of a lot of dead wood middle management instead of the people who actually build the cars..

For the last few years Lexus, Toyota and Honda were found to be the most reliable cars with the least amount of repairs. GM, Ford and Chrysler just don't have the quality of Japanese vehicles. Everything on the Japanese vehicles fit and works as advertised. My last Japanese truck was a 97 Toyota 4 Runner, had it for 5 years until some idiot hit it head on and totaled it. Nothing and I mean nothing ever went wrong with that truck. At that time Toyota was not offering any financing incentives, so I bought a Chevrolet Trailblazer 4x4 at zero % . The truck has had several minor problems but it sure doesn't match the 4 Runner when it comes to fit and finish. My daughter has a Lexus 470 SUV with over 70,000 miles on it and has never had anything go wrong with it. When it's time to replace my Trailblazer, Im going back to Toyota or Lexus. Who needs the hassle of car and truck repairs?

It's too bad but the cost of manufacturing here in this country is so high that we can no longer be competitive in the market place. It's scary to think about the long term economic effect this will have on our country and I'm not sure that there is an easy answer for it. I only hope and pray that this country can dominate in areas outside of manufacturing (technology, medicine, etc) or we could be in serious trouble down the road.
