I am restoring a licence plate. Took it down to bare metal, primed with etching primer, painted main color with auto enamel. The problem when painting the numbers if paint got on the main color it lifts off the paint. What am I doing wrong?

you probably have laquer for the lettering or base coat and it will lift fresh enamel.
