I have a gauge that's been driving me nuts for a year now, when the engine is first started and warming up the gauge will go slowly all the way to 230 than drop to the correct temp. between 175 and 190. I have no thread sealer on the sending unit ( which I put a new one in) checked the gauge ( shorted it to ground and needle when to max) and it seems to be working fine. Through it mite be the stat. changed that still can't fine the problem. Any idea's ? Joe

The gauge reads 0 when first started and as the engine warms up it goes to max then back down to 180. If I change the sender wire to the other post on the gauge would I damage the gauge if incorrect? Joe

Several things that have happed to me...first the gauge should be marked with a +, - and S for sending unit. Where is the sender, head or intake? The gauge power...where does it come from? I have had feedback from other sources when I "daisy chained" the power wire. Extra long wire from the sender to the gauge will also cause resistance reading problems. I ended up getting a cheap non-electric gauge and put it in the "other" hole (head or intake) and watched the difference to rule out a bad gauge and give me piece of mind.

joep, look at what you wrote. Gauge rises to max. then goes down to "normal". Probably the sending wire is intermitently grounded. Suggest disconnecting old wire, and running temporary wire. If gauge then works as it should, make temporary wire permanet and remove old wire.

It sounds like the thermostat is not opening like it should. Most thermostats do not open until they get above operating temperature and then level off. 230 is too high.
