Can anyone ID this rack? I'm not sure if it is early Chevette, MG Midget or early Pinto.

Just a follow-up, after I disassembled the rack, I found that there were NO BUSHINGS IN THE HOUSING!!!!! Someone wentto a lot of trouble to make it pretty but ignored making it safe. Anyway, a co-worker, took it home and machined some bushings for me. Putting it back together today. Thanks for all he help guys....Jaybird

Good idea. I'll have it out in the morning. The guys at the parts house will let me root through the books and boxes until I match one up. Just need a place to start. Here is a bottoms up view

Check the size of the steering shaft and count the splines, Then look it up in any catalog that carries Borgenson Joints. It will tell you for sure.

It looks like a MG Midget.

That was my first guess. I have a 65 Sprite in the garage and compared them. Similar but different. It mounts the same way but has a different housing. It's not an early Pinto......duh those interchange with the Must II and are completely different. I need to find an MGB expert. Look similar to the Moss motors illustrations in their catalog......this is keeping me from going to Goodguys Columbus today.....and missing a nice topless day!

I have a '76 MG Midget in the garage...I will take some measurements. It isn't an early MG unit. I suspect that it came from the 1500 Midget. I will post what I get on Monday. If you are looking of MG help go here and ask. http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=&source=&subject=&thread=

Leon and Jaybird. If this is a Dodge Omni unit as I suspect it is there is a Co. Called Sweel Mfg. in Kalamazoo that makes an adfjustable mount set up that is polished aluminum that will bolt up to the original mounts. The mounts on the tube are clamped with a set screw and you can move the mounts to match up to the chassis mounts. I made this change on a 32 Vicky, I purchased the unit at Lanes in Watervliet, MI. you may have to change the tie rod ends as I believe the Omni has metric threads if I remember right the cost was about $600.00.Lyled

I had a Model A with indepeendent suspension on it with an "Omni Horizon" rack and pinion that looks a lot like this one. It had a real odd number of splines on the input shaft where you hooked up the steering.

Leon, I checked the rack to the chart. It is a 9/16 OD 36 spline Chrysler. Any idea where I can get inner housing bushings for this? I'm gonna try the dealer tomorrow but fully expect to get laughed at. I can take the rack shaft, on the drivers side and move it around about .25 in any direction. May end up having to have some bushings made. One pinion bearing, 817697 is toast. I'm screwed here. I would just order a new Flaming Rive ror something but the mounts are custom fabricated, blended into the frame and painted.

Also, Being that its installed on a straight axel, be sure to double check the width if your considering buying a new one, also see if one boot has been removed if so, It could have a Rack exstinsion installed in it. Some custom applications shouldn't be takin for granit,

The mounting is common, Several companies use those on thier Billet racks, Im going to speculate on the tierod ends with out seeing them first hand.
