Here's a good one for you chemists and /or law enforcement types. I have a Vintage racecar with an ID tag on it. I purchased the car from a friend of mine. He sanded the chassis down, to prep it for paint, and made the tag unreadable. no, I know what you're thinking, this is notan attempt to hide a stolen car. This was a chassis bulders ID tag. we are trying to track down the original builder. If we can read the tag we can locate the builder and see who the original owner was.

So, here is where the chemistry & law enforcement come in. there is a method of acid etching metal to reveal stamped numbers on metal parts. Law enforcement uses it to ID guns with serial numbers filed or sanded off. supposedly, when the numbers sre stamped it changes the grain of the material permanently. The acid bath reveals this changed material structure. So, does anyone know of a kit or know of this process and what I might need to do it? I figure I'll have one shot and don't want to blow it. I'd take it to the sheriffs office but....it's 20ft long. Might not fit into the lab too well. any help is appreciated.

Just a thought before all of the hotshot forensics stuff..take regular carbon paper and turn it so the carbon is facing you..then cover it with a sheet of white paper and rub the paper..the image will transfer onto the white paper. When you get the image onto the white paper hold it up to a mirror and you can read the "impression".....good luck!!
