How about a new Forum Topic that would provide info for rodders traveling to out of town Rod Runs. Such as info on hotels / motels, restaurants, places to go and identify places not to go to. For instance, we are going to the Frog Follies in Evansville, Indiana this weekend. A good restaurant we go to, is the Log Inn just north and east of hwy 41 and I64. For tables of 4 or more it's all the fried chicken and country ham you can eat, you can hurt yourself if your not careful. If you leave there hungry it's your own fault. Also Evansville is home to the worst motel I've ever been to, it's the Blue Sky Inn on hwy 41, I believe it's the original Roach Motel, and wouldn't stay there if it was free. They also have some small mom and pop non chain motels between the airport and the city that I think you pay for by the hour. They are also a good place to stay away from. We now stay at the Best Western just off or hwy 41 and I64. It's pretty decent and $91/night. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant in Evansville?

I threw together a web page showing some motels in Evansville, Indiana (plus nearby Princeton), with photos and maps. Not sure I'll have this at this address for long, but for now it's at

http://frankfortky.tripod.com/evansville_indiana_motels/

If I have time, I'll snap some photos of these motels and take some notes to see if the web data is still current and then update this web page.

BTW, does anyone know where the old Grumpy Pal Motor Court was on Hwy 41 N?

Becareful of some of the non chain motels in Evansville. They can be really nasty. Especially watch out for the one's that charge by the hour.

cruizznn, yes we stay at the Best Western on Rusher Creek rd. It's a good place, you'll like it. Won't be there this year, as I sold my 46 Ford Convertible and am without a pre 48 streetrod. I'm just going for a day and not the whole weekend.

Just got a room at StudioPlus in Evansville, located at I-164 and Lloyd Expressway, on SE side of town, so if you're looking for a place to stay, you might call em at (812) 479-0103.

We drove over to Evansville yesterday to scope out the place, since it had been 15 years or more since I'd been there.

GMan, the BlueSkyInn you referred to is indeed the old Holiday Inn, which later became Knights Inn, the BlueSkyInn and now Roadside Inn. What a dump. Windows broken out, curtains flapping in the breeze, not nice people milling about. Apparently, the original US 41 was where a lot of motels were that were on the postcards. The new/current US 41 runs parallel and just east of that, and the old US 41 is now called Fares Ave. Bad part of town.

From what I see, up north near I-64, or on the SE side, LloydExpressway at I-164, are the places you wanna stay. The SE side has all the national stores and restaurants, but boy it's a busy place (6 lane highway), so we're cancelling our reservation at Studio Plus and moving to a small, family owned motel 20 miles from the 4-H Park, so we can park at the door and have some peace and quiet.

Motel6 on US41, near the airport, has parking at the door, and has a Dennys, Hardees and a small shopping center nearby, same side of the road, within easy walking distance. However, I avoid motels near airports and the Days Inn Airport is REAL close (hop over the fence and to your plane close).

Marriott is just north (real close) of the airport and nothing else within walking distance. Holiday Inn and Drury Inn are just south of Motel6 and has a local restaurant next door. Dennys and Hardees mentioned previously are within walking distance, so long as you don't mind crossing railroad tracks.

On the north side, near I-64, Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn, Best Western and Super8 are all clustered together, with Dennys, McDonalds and Arbys within easy walking distance. Across US41 is Stoll's, an Amish restaurant that supposedly has great food (the parking lot was pretty full at 2pm).

North of I-64 is Quality Inn which is REAL close to the interstate (note... noisy) and Wendys and Country Market (w.buffet) are about 600 yards away on an access road.

Further north at Princeton, Indiana, is a Days Inn which has some rooms with ground floor access, but most rooms are on 2-4 with outside stair.s This has an atrium and indoor pool, but the place is pretty tired. Across the road is a box called Hampton Inn, which looked clean. Nearby is a strip with a good number of restauarants (McDonalds and Ponderosa are withing walking distance), including PizzaHut and Applebees.

Al, your link to the postcards site... that's where I got some of those photos on the web site I created (see above). St Marys Motel is supposedly on Fares Ave, but we didn't go look at it. Never did see Amoco Big Foot Motel, which is supposedly between Airport and 4-H Park and has park at your door access, however, they're supposedly sold out 2 years in advance for FrogFollies dates (per a telcon with clerk).

We didn't even try to go look at OakMeadowLodge cause this definitely in the "hi-rent" district. (we passed a silver Lamborghini Countach on New Harmony Rd, nearby).

On the SE side at LloydExpressway and I-164, on the SW corner of the intersection are Studio Plus, Residence Inn, Hampton Inn, and Comfort Inn, all within walking distance (if you're in good shape) to Texas Roadhouse and a PastaGrille. In the NW corner of the intersection is Baymont Inn and I forget what else.

it's good to know where to stay and where to stay away from. we had a run in ft worth that if you strayed a couple blocks the wrong way you were in the bad lands. no one bothered to tell folks this and a few got lost where they should not be.

If you are into barbecue--there used to be a place called Porky's that was excellent Think it is still there.--There is always Hooters and a pretty good hamburger/bar joint down b the riverboat.
