Boy is this bad economy really is bad news for streetrodding. Streetrods on a well knew inter-net are really haveing a bad time selling and there's alot of them that need money badly. And it dont look like it's going to get better very soon. There's alot of talk out on the road with trucker and thy do hear it all. And the trucking is starting to show it. I think if anyone can put there rides away for sometime it mybe a good idea or sell them cheap and no one want's to do that. But there is some high rower out there. Barrett Jackson was'nt really that great but there well be more to come. No matter which way you look at it or just stick you'er head in the sand it is'nt that good. But there is some money still flying around if you'er lucky and if you beleave in luck. But i think you better buckle down and weit and see and if you have the exter money you be able to find a good deal. No hot rodding well never go away but someone well take it in the wallets. But hay STREETRODDING FOREVER.

Good grief! No reason to panic. If you've got a street rod hang on to it, while it may be worth a bit less than one would like for sometime this period will pass. With gasoline prices going down might as well enjoy driving what you have when you can.

For goodness sake don't anyone panic over their 401K or other stock based investment. This is one of those things that just needs to be ridden out, or if you have some cash laying around, hidden in the mattress, or buried in a fruit jar it might just be a good time to pick up a few bargains that will enhance your situation in the future.

"Two months after the election things will look alot different than they do now"

Yeah, you're right! We'll be even further in the tank. If you think there is going to be a sharp market turnaround within 60 days after the election you need to go back to school and take an econ course. On average it takes 8 years between deployment of economic plans and results. If you're lucky maybe it will only take 4 years. Changes in the economy are like a freight train, takes a long time to get up to speed or a long time to come to a halt.

Looks to me that a majority of the sellers want to be "BJ Stars"...Barrett-Jackson. They need to see their $20K car advertised on Ebay for a "Buy it Now" price of $65K. BJ, Mecum, R&M......sell by male ego power. It's not about the car but how big the seller can puff the chest.

Jim said it

In many cases I suspect you may be right Jim. I've lately seen some pretty steep prices on average or below average cars. I've always thought of those sellers as ones who really didn't want to sell, just gloat.

Cars are selling here....come on Danny lets not bring the entire discussion down worrying about things that as many mentioned will not change this year. Gas is down to $2.49 I think I may take the big block for a drive!

From my view point, some cars are still selling for good money, but the average everyday hot rods are not selling. Seems like it's gotta be the "right" piece.

My worry is what lies ahead for the economy after Obama gets elected. By "spreading around the wealth" (tax money from the people that are PRODUCTIVE in this country) OBama will create a new generation of uneducated, unskilled, arrogant, and even hostile generation of people that will expect the government to support them in every way....health care, housing, tax credits, and gov subsidy. Look out for big government, high taxes, and more gov controls.

What's it like in Canada???

It occurs to me we have been spreading the wealth around for the last several years. The rich got richer, and now we the working middle class are bailing them out for being greedy and probably stupid. Some of us may end up in the unemployment line from that re-distribution of our wealth to those who truly did not deserve squat.

In the last two years our ranking educationally against 24 other countries has dropped from 16th to 18th. So much for leaving no child behind. But look at the bright side, in a few years our high school grads will be too illiterate to fill out an unemployment benefits form. Just think of all the money we'll be saving.

Dont like "NEW IDEAS" ??--stick with the ones we have been using for the better part of a decade now-- they seem to be working well- I am REALLY starting to get sick of hearing this b.s.- surely to god we can find something else to talk about.. And I also hope that at least over the next four years the repubs can come up with a better slam then nobama- it sounds like something a 3rd grader came up with.. If you must argue this nonsense repeatedly lets try this-Instead of bitching about how "affraid" you are of Obama- tell us what your side is gonna offer to help make our country better than it is now.. Anything different than what has got us in this mess?

On selling cars because of the economy, I like my car - I am keeping it! I will sell every other one I own before I sell it. And don't think these are idle words, I sold everything but a 50 Ford less than 15 years ago. That little 50 had to become my driver for three years. My hot rods are not up to the quality of a lot of rods owned by people on this forum but I love them and sure enjoy driving them, it is in the mindset.

Hey guys and gals, maybe socialism isn't all that bad. One thing we all have in common is that we love cars. Did you ever see pictures of CUBA, where they have all these old american made cars all over the streets. Some are up on concrete blocks, others with their hoods up and guys trying to patch a water hose . Trust me, it will be just like heaven. Hey, where the hell is SHINE on this ?

From what i have seen the low end cars--15-22K are selling--those higher are moving very slow. I had a guy hot to trot on mine--flew in from Ca. said he would buy it and then said he didn't like the way the hood fit, so he won't buy. At least be honest. Cars will sell and trade. Just depends on what anyone wants. I have 2 cars picked out to go look at if mine sells or if my old coupe comes up I will go buy it regardless. Just wish my IRA was as predictable. I will withhold any comments til after the election. I don't like Obama--seen too much of him in my state. All I can do is take care of myself and family first---that is the most important thing. All the rest is plain rhetoric. .02 worth.

The Barrett-Jackson Auction in Vegas was quite a gamble for the consignors since it was a first year venue as well as the uncertainty of the collector car market as a whole. It seemed to be a little bit of a roller coaster ride for some sellers as the cars did less than expected while others brought good money. Since it is all "no reserve", some sellers watched the bidding stall short of their anticipated bid amounts. The Barrett-Jackson market has been crazy for the most part in past years and it could be that we are seeing a market correction at this point in time. Previous years have been very good for most sellers and it's tough to see prices fall for whatever reason. You have to give credit to the B-J management for promoting a first class event everytime from the initial advertising all the way through to the hoop lah of the event itself. I took seven vehicles and and was happy with the prices on them (except one of course) but when my Boyd Roadster brought $120,000.00 on Saturday, all was well. Scottsdale in January should be interesting and a good barometer for collector car prices in 2009. Whatever happens, it's still about the cars and all the new friends we make along the way....

Back to cars--GREAT I personally thought there was a few more cars selling this summer then in the last few years prior- I agree with REBORN and others in the thought that the lower dollar cars are still selling- The big money stuff I think is kinda tight right now.. How about trading?- Seems to me alot of swapping going on.. Just went this morning to Northern ohio to look at a swap for a 34 ford tudor for my vette and bike..I brought back what I took - I thought I should hold out a little longer, for something different, but I do think there seems to be more swapping than used to be.. Anyone else see this as a trend?

I personally wouldn't mind trading right now--have gotten a few nibbles, but nothing to my liking yet. Might be easier--have seen a couple of deals worked here locally. Sometimes a change of scenery might even help with a sale on down the road.

I think you are exactly right. The couple of cars that I have on the internet for sale have not sold outright. I have mostly been offered trades which is okay if it works out for both parties. Most of the time it's difficult to find a win-win situation for everyone. Even if we don't trade, we still get to talk about hotrods for a while.

Pardon me friends, but this guy shows up every six months just to bitch and moan and ruffle feathers, then disappears. We've all gotten into another political pissing match here and nobody is benefitting.

I agree, times are tough. Cars aren't selling like they were even 6 months ago. Money is tight everywhere, but those who have money are looking for deals! Right now finished cars are a good 'investment'. Property is still out of site even with all the foreclosures, and buyers are pulling money from other "funds" to enjoy themselves a little.

I agree Dave, I think trading is gaining momentum. Most of us have our cars paid for and if we can't sell 'em let's swap for something of equal value (or up or down a little) and start out fresh!

I didn't work my butt off for 42 years to sit in front of the TV and moan about the world. The economy sucks overall but I'm sticking with streetrodding even if I have to start stealing gas. The price of EVERYTHING has gone down somewhat because too many people are buying into the doomsday anti-Bush crap they see on the major news networks.

A good friend of mine has had two strokes in the past month, and another is going to have back surgery that may leave him partially paralyzed. I plan to focus on what's RELEVANT to me for as long as possible...and keep wearing out the secondaries and tires on my streetrod. Nobody will fix our country's problems in the next four-years...so get out and drive!

dot com . remember it ? i have witnessed way too many friends trying to get rich setting on their ass waiting for the market to make them rich. most have lost their retirement from being stupid and risky. if you play in the risk field of the market you have no one to blame but yourself. i have lost nothing. my investment grows every year . buy dirt ! as for the car market you are seeing the end of it. there are just far more folks getting out than coming in. the pre 48 cars are just no going to sell well. the market is flooded with them . at bj the only thing doing well were the restomods .

I agree Shine -Most car guys would rather pass on a streetrod from pre 49. They are" over priced and expensive" and the mentality of the pre 49 thing is getting pretty lame. What makes a 55 chevy less of a car than a 32 roadster thats glass? They both go down the road and make noise, and there is a boatload of them for sale out there and people are still building more to sell.

your right big dude. our state run is dying because of a few die hard pre 48 guys. they think the lssra should be run just like the nsra . well lots of folks have sold their rods and built cars with a little more room and comfort but now arent welcome at a run they've supported for years . sad that a state this big can only draw 350 or so cars to the state run.

The NSRA is changing. Some of their shows now go up to include cars built until 1976. That's gonna bring a lot of new people to the shows. I enjoy seeing all years of cars when I go to a show, not just pre 49's. Most people can't afford to buy a streetrod anymore, and the economy is scaring the hell out of a lot of them. They're going to hang on to their money, wait for better times......CR

Went to the annual Lion's Club fund raiser car show here yesterday and there were roughly 100-150 cars (I didn't do an accurate count). Of those there were fewer than ten that were street rods based upon a pre 1949 car. Quite a number of '50s and '60s original and restored cars, even quite a number of restored pre '50s cars, including a few T's of various years and body styles. Only thirties era coupe that was there was a very nicely done '34 Plymouth powered with a hemi, there was also a very nice '47 Chrysler convertible sporting a 440 with 3X2 intake. Some idiot actually showed up with a 1962 Unimog. There was not a single roadster of any make. Many of the participants came from over 100 miles away. Last year, as well as previous years, was pretty much evenly divided with respect to pre '49 street rods and everything else. About 75% of those bringing cars were old farts like me, the rest were not too far behind. Only a couple of guys were under forty. Things are changing in world of car enthusiasts.
