I have 3 HEI distributors for small block chevys. GM 1103337 and 1103274 and an aftermarket with no number. I have the 330 HP chevy crate motor that calls for a 1104067. While they all fit SBC the deal with the melonized gear(whatever that is) is critical. No numbers on these gears that I can see. Any idea how to tell if these distributors have the right gear or should I just buy a new gear and put it on? Will they all interchange? What the...?

What year engine is it. The distributors are the same for all small blocks , up to 1986.

It is either a 2000 or 2002 it just slips my memory. I will have to go look up the number again. What happened in 1986? I know you often see early 350 or late 350. Was that the year of the change?

I googled and got the first entry as a forum page. Clearly this is a highly talked about issue and I'd swear there is 100 opinions. I gather the gears are pretty much universal fits on GM HEI distributors. Putting a melonized gear on any of the distributors I have would be easy save the billet one where the shaft is most likely different from the GM gear. I did note in the discussions that the melonized gear is darker in color. The billit distributor has a dark black gear. I have yet to find a part number on any of the gears and not on the billit distributor. All gears are steel of that I am sure. Thanks, Ol' Bear
