I just installed a new starter from Power Master 9600 MASTERTORQUE STAR.CHV 168/153 TOOTH and it worked great right out of the box. Yesterday I stopped after a cruise and when I returned it just clicked the solenoid appx three tries then started fine. today I tried to start it after sitting all night the same thing happened.

Any idea?

Thanks as always for listening. Tom

Loose connection somewhere between the battery and the starter or insufficient ground.

Hi Tom,
What I have experienced that seems to avoid ANY problems is: Battery of sufficient CCA, 0 gauge cables, with ground to engine block near or on starter. Hot Start Relay. This combination has worked w/o fail even on my boat with a blown 502 Chev. Hope this helps.

Double check the connections for the main battery and ground cables. Make sure the starter has a good ground to the battery, if your ground is to the chassis and then to the motor( say up by the altenator) there is a great possibility of a dirty connection, which would cause this scenario. It is always best to run a ground directly to a starter bolt as well as one to the body.

I agree with the others on the ground. Every time I have a electic problem it is the ground. I had a starting problem this spring, had the battery checked, it had a cell going bad, it was not dead yet but close. I would crank two or three time to get it started. Put a new one in and have not had a problem. Take your battery to a good battery shop and have them load test it.

Ditto with dwalters. Most rods are caveman/drag strip wired when it comes to proper grounding. Especially the main ground cable off the battery.

I had a power master starter for one week nothing but trouble sent it back. Installed a GM mini starter no problems.

I have found a local shop that rebuilds starters and generators . They have rebuilt new factory built units that did not work. That's craftsmanship that a factory can't have.

Well that little gremlin is back again!! it happened again twice last night. Turned the key sounded like the solenoid clicked but no start. I eurned the key back off and tried it again and it started qwithout hesitation and this happen twice. I redid all of the connections from the battery to the starter and the ground. i will be back at it today. Thanks again everyone for your advice.
