You run a lockup switch if you have the lockup converter. Painless or RF havea setup that also cuts it out when the brakes are applied or speed reduced. You also need to get a geometry correcter for your carb to run the cable out of. If you have a lockup converter, you have to have it lockup or it could get pretty warm. I think that is what you were asking about.

I got my questions about transmiission answered from brian41chevy on this site and bowtieoverdrive.com. I finaly bought the complete kit from bowtie overdrive and they were very helpful with thier phone tech line.
TV cable controls the gears, not the converter lock up. No, No, no switch for the lock up. Use a Ron Francis TC-70 mini-module that allows you to set lock up speed. It is all external, mounts under dash. www.ronfrancis.com
Mark......converter must be unlocked at about 44 miles per hour depending on rear ratio and tire size. No problem to drive with a unlocked converter = trans will slip same as TH 350. Won't hurt it.
It just doesn't make any sense to run it without the lock up. That helps your milage. Why not use it the way it was designed to be used. If it is an early 700 you can put a pressure switch into the side port to control the lock up. If it is a later one you use the internal one.

2004R is a good trans, so is the 700R4. Just a difference of opinion. The early 700 had a lot of problems but, if you are rebuilding one you can make it a very good trans with some fairly minor modifactions. I think the problems start for a lot of guys jumping into automatics thinking they are easy to do. Surprise, they are not. There are a lot of tricks you learn when building them that you will never find in a book. The pressure switch you run in the side port of an early one cost about $15.00 last time I did one.

There is no science behind making a 700R4 work with lockup. Lockup is one of the main reasons for using a 700R4 ot2004R. Especially these days. Here is all it takes
I tend to prefer the 700r4 mainly because I like the lower first gear 3.06 compared to the the 200-4r's 2.74. That allows me to use a higher rear axle ratio (lower numeically) for cruising on the top end. (The overdrive ratios of the two transmissions are nearly the same, .7 compared to .67). I don't run the lock-up typically because I don't want to run the chance of having a lock-up clutch disentigrate through my transmission especially when running some decent horsepower. If you are heads-up enough to disengage the lock-up when you are putting your foot in it, that is fine. I just choose not to mess with it.
I agree shine, as the OD on the two transmissions are nearly identical as I noted above, OD ratio and tire circumference are the key factors in calculating cruizin speed, but with the lower first gear in the 700 you can get off the line quicker.
