I just read of a tragic death of a Streetrodder who traveled to Massachusetts, purchased a streetrod and was involved in a fatal accident while driving home to Illinois. Reports say the car drifted off the highway and struck a guard rail. It raises the question, should anyone start out on a high speed, long distance trip on an Interstate Highway in a car you know nothing about? This is done all the time when cars are purchased at events, and in the past, I've done the exact same thing. After this tragic event, I now question the wisdom of such actions. From now on no matter how good a vehicle I'm purchasing, I will trailer it home for a thorough inspection and shake down cruises before any high speed driving or long distance trips are taken. I might be getting cautious in my old age but trailering home a car you know nothing about may be the prudent thing to do.

I would like to say that I agree with Gary, it is not worth taking a chance no matter how good the car looks on the surface. A few years ago a friend of mine decided he just had to have a hot rod and he did not want to take the time to build one. He found one advertised in a town about 500 miles away, a model A sedan. He bought a one way plane ticket to the town, arriving at night, and bought the car. He then drove it home, at night. He brought it to my shop a few days later to check out a few little things he thought might be wrong. We found that the body was held on by only 3 little quarter inch bolts and the brake rod to the M/C had been welded by someone who did not know how to weld. It looked like it was stuck together with bubble gum! My helper was under the car and said,"do you want to see the rear motor mount?". I said" not necessarily, why?" He pulled it loose WITH HIS HANDS and handed it to me!! I could go on, but you get the idea. He had an angel on his shoulder that night. We ended up taking the body off of the frame and basicly rebuilding the car. He got lucky, but don't depend on it turning out that way.

what do you mean by inspected? A 23 nsra would be ok, but a state inspection is useless to me. Our state only performs a minimal check. Headlights, tail and brake lights, horn, wipers, and loudness of the exhaust. I believe I would trailer before driving someone's handiwork!......CR

There is some scary stuff out there! I'd never buy a car and drive it cross-country! Sad story Gary, where did you read that?

Many have had close calls in cars we've built and owned for years, I wouldn't trust a stranger's build ability based on the paint. You're taking your life in your own hands with an unknown custom build, not like buying a 25,000 mile two year old Toyota... know what I mean?

Bear, why not? It was a rant spread over darn near every topic area on the system. Anyone can understand one's grief at having lost a parent but to imply it was the fault of an insurance company was totally outrageous. Nothing in the rant fully explained anything of the circumstance. Was it mechanical failure? Was it road conditions? Was it lack of prudence on the part of the driver? Did the driver suffer from a stroke or heart attack? All anyone knew was the driver was 63 years old and had bought a car some distance from home and elected to drive it home though not having a binder with Grundy for the specific car. A binder which would have only covered the value of the car and driver liability in an accident with another vehicle. Assuming the driver had insurance on other vehicles the latter aspect would have been covered though insurances on other vehicles though the specific car was not on those respective policies at the time. The liability portions of ones auto insurance is in effect regardless of the vehicle you are driving, including rental cars in most cases. What isn't necessarily in effect would be the specific comprehensive coverages within the other policy.

It was appropriate for Eriq to delete the post(s)!

Sorry Starfire, there was no rant by Mr. Meyersons daughter on any other topic except Grundy didn't take Mr. Meyersons call to get coverage on his newly purchased vehicle. Why don't you read Mr. Meyerson daughters post on the current insurance thread on this site. For you to slam Mr. Meyersons daughter shows your total lack of consideration and compassion for a family thats just lost a loved one. I just don't understand where your coming from on about 100% of your posts. Its apparent a lot of others posting on this site feel the same way about you especially after you told us about your 9 second Starfire. I believe you owe Mr. Meyersons daughter an apology.

Gary, I have never said I had a nine second Starfire either now or in the past. I have said there were 394 powered Oldsmobiles which did indeed turn in the 9's. You can find that on the web if you look enough into record runs.

For your information, I have also had an E-mail exhange with the young lady who apparently has no perspective on settling an estate. As such I advised her to retain a lawyer to open probate which would relieve her of the personal stress of being overwhelmed by after death bills and claims, many of which will be dismissed by the probate court. Having a lawyer open probate will require her to give to that person all of the records of her father's personal business affairs, which I suspect she knew nothing about at all.

I'm sorry you are unable to intellectually handle my posts, your problem not mine.

Now meyersons post is off the insurance post.. To be COMPLETLY honest I am about sick of this... The specific post was about insurance companies-- examples were givin in detail. THATS WHY the original poster asked for examples of claims with different companies..It seems that anymore if you have a complaint its fine unless its about an advertiser.. SADLY it looks as if my favorite website has sold out.... Let the advertisers stand up for themselves..If they cant do it let them stay on there sinking ships..It looks as the buyer beware should be renamed-"problems with suppliers except for our advertisers"

I dont really know how many times we have to say this guys but the forums are not a place for accusations like this and we will remove any post we find that we feel is way out of bounds. It has always been this way and it will always be this way. You may feel like we are sell outs and thats your business. All I can tell you is that we have been running this site for 10 years and we have never turned a profit so if we're doing this for the money then we're doing a bad job at it. The forum will not be hijacked by people who feel that they can use it to make accusations like this, that's what the courts are for and that's where they need to stay. I'm sorry if you feel that anyone should be able to say anything they want but how would you feel if a bunch of guys who had a beef with you came on and told us how you were a pedophile? Maybe they say they even witnessed you doing it and had pictures and a police report? Would they be right? Should we allow it on the site? Our policy is, we don't care if they're right or wrong, this is not the place for it. Anything said on the Internet is worldwide so we have to be very careful about how we police this site.

Well back on topic, I am sorry to here of the accident that claimed a streetrodder. And yes, having a car safety inspected before it goes on the road for a long trip regardless of speed, would be a prudent thing to to. Couple of years ago I read an article about the Street Rodder Mag car being driven from York to Ohio when in the mountains several of important bolts fell off the car. The driver Jerry Dixey, stated that they were in such a hurry to get the car out the door, some bolt tiightening was missed. Luckily no accident happened and no loss of life. But if it could happen to that organization, it could happen to anyone.

Not everyone has access to or the money to have something trailered a long distance. And sometimes cutting corners results in deadly experiences. The last car I bought, I went over and under it with a mechanic friend and the owner, and had the owner make some changes (brake leakage) prior to delivery. The owner drove it 200 miles to meet me, and I drove it another 200 miles to home. Hindsight says something could have gone terribly wrong on the way home but it didn't. I guess I was lucky, especially on the twisty PA Turnpike in the dead of night.

As for the Grundy issue, I don't know all of the facts so I can not speak to it. However, if the purchaser already had insurance for another streetrod or daily driver, it should have been a simple thing to add insurance for the new one. Most companies allow you X number of days after purchase to add it and still be covered under an existing policy. I've never has a problem with Grundy. But for the best service I have found Hagerty to be tops. Unfortunately, so are their premiums.

As to inspections, no inspection is absolute. I have seen some NSRA 23's given out when they should not have been. For the most part I think the NSRA does a good job, but some of the local NSRA inspectors have looked the other way for friend's. The best choice is an independant who does not know the owner or the car and is getting paid for the service.

Could not find any postings about Meyerson / Grundy, so can not comment on what was said. But my condolences go out to his family at his loss.

Hey Eriq, why don't you put a Personal Message (PM) capability on the site, so those who want to discuss an issue not fitting of the site can continue it via a PM? That way the pages and posts stay squeaky clean, and those who want to rant can use a different vehicle. Might give you some relief time from your monitoring.

There is quite a few shady stuff on the roads, But we also have to remember the car in question might not have been the car. Without knowing the full details. like was their health problems that we were not aware of? was it the car or the diver?

But back to the subject. That's a tough call to say what would be good on the highways and what is not. Without knowing the builder and/or doing research on the builder, calling other people that have bought his cars.

That's the same as going to the Nats with cash to buy a car and driving it home. you never know.

Dave, I dont read the forums for content only for code errors. If no one complains about a particular thread or post I'll most likely never even know about it. I work a regular 50-hr/wk job and then come home and work till late at night and all day on Saturday and Sunday writing code for this site, I don't have time to pay attention to the content itself. I don't know what "novak" means but so far no one's complained about it so I guess it's ok.

Thanks to Al, Eriq, Tammy and Sandra for the great site! I understand that not all posts are in the best interest of the site and that some editing must be done from time to time. My comments have been removed too, but it didn't hurt my feelings. A racial comment was made earlier today that needed to be removed and it was promptly. I'm greatful that you four watch this site close enough to make a difference!

That said, I too wanna see some some of Starfire's claimed car museum BS. Put up or shut up! I also don't get where you're coming from 99% of the time, although you obviously do a lot of web searching for answers, and freely offer help... although I don't necessarily agree with it. Back up some of that bragging. I too remember you claiming you had a 9 second car.

Many years ago, I bought my 1940 Packard streetrod in Sarasota, a town about 85 miles from where I live in Florida. It had a late model Chevrolet engine in it, and it looked pretty good. A badly leaking 350 trans. made me leery, so I had the car transported to my home. Good thing I did! The wiring in the car was all one gauge and color, and the whole electrical system was run through a single 40 amp circuit breaker. After running just a few minutes, the breaker would cut out, and the car would stop. Also, the steering and brakes were borderline. I would have ended up on the hook, or worse. Glad I didn't try to drive it home. Scruffybeast

Interesting can of worms here today........Sorry to hear of the loss of any streetrodder, my condolences to the family. As for Eriq, Tammy, and big Al, kudo's to the great work you do here, similar to Dave Hughs I just know I hang around too much. Heck I even drop in during Lunch breaks at work , I don't know if trailering the car home is any better, but i certainly would get it on a hoist for a look see before a cross country jaunt.

Now for Starfire, does anyone here live near Weimer, Texas? maybe they could drop by and take some pictures for us...............

I got a car from a guy once that had cobbled up wiring on it too. Driving the back roads in the country I hit the high beams and everything went black. The dumb ass had a bad highbeam switch and forgot to tell me-he also didnt tell me he had his headlights fused in 4 places!

Hmmm, some of these stories sound familiar. I purchased a 39 Chev years ago as a driver and brought it home to give the once over inspection which lead me not to drive it anymore until I changed everything. This thing vibrated once on the open road, so as you do you look for the obvious balance wheels etc. Nope tear the diff out and set the angles up correctly, this was doing a nose dive by 8 degrees. Two years later it was back on the road with everything changed. It pays not to get over excited by purchasing your first rod unless you do your homework prior to the point of sale.

I say a inspection is a must but nothing beats a final by the guy driving it.Just now ,I was looking over a motorcycle a co-worker just had a new front tire installed on and here the front brake caliper bolts are sticking out on the last few threads. The authorized dealer he took it to didn't tighten them. I've had my son pull in to my work after the Pontiac dealer installed a new rack and pinion under warranty and the right tie rod end fell off, right here in the parking lot!! Could've killed him and his girlfriend. I've always advised all my friends and children to wash their own vehicles and do a inspection each time of every nut and bolt etc they can lay their hands on.Our sympathies go to all who have lost a loved one. Eriq, you're doing a fine job here and we appreciate it.

I can't speak for Starfire, nor would I want to, but you guys trying to run with a Saleen Mustang have a bolt loose someplace. They ain't quarter milers, although they ain't no slouch either. Top end is their forte. They don't cost upwards of $80k for the Saleen lettering on the sides. The new Shelby Mustang GT500KR will hang tough with then, but that's a cool $75k worth of goodies too,

I only pick on cars I feel comfortable with, like grannie in her Pinto. Don't do no Mustangs, Camaro's or anything with a Penta Star on it. LOL
