I have a set of three gauges of unknown origin or manufacture. The volt and oil gauges seem to work perfectly, but I have no idea what to buy for a temp sender. How could I test the gauge to know what resistance of temp sender to buy?

I'll snap a picture tonight and post it. I've taken it apart and there is nothing to identify it at all. I'd sure hate to get the wrong one in and think it's running at 180 when in reality its running at 220!

Okay, here's a few pics with and without the flash. Anyone recognize these? I'm sure they're 70's vintage, or maybe even 80's. Probably a cheapie set from Checker or Auto Zone or something, but they fit perfectly in the overhead area so I'd like to use them!

Eric, grab any sending unit and hook it up with a jumper wire, put the sending unit in a pot of boiling water on the barbecue. See what it reads as the water just starts to boil, or compare the temp with a cooking thermometer. Just keep borrowing sending units until you get it right

Eric, without a way to add and vary resistance to ground on the sender side of it, with power hooked to the ignition side, you will not be able to tell for sure the ohm range the gauge was intended to read. I have a tool with a series of resistance rheostats one range is 0-100 ohms, another is 100-1000 and then 1000-10000 ohms. I can figure out what range and how a gauge reads it with this tool. Some read from more resistance to less and others are less to more. If you were closer I would check it for you. Most likely it's gonna be a common range for most after market electric temp senders. They are never accurate, just used for a range for determining "normal" operation temp. Strictly a reference point. Like davyj said , gonna have to try some senders unless you know someone who has this old tool.

Aaaaaah Eric, we didn't mean to insult you. ;-) With all them kids you'd think you have a little more patience for humor. LOL

You could always UPS it to Brant. He's got the tool, maybe not the time, to check it out.

Yo Dave, THAT makes sense! I think that's what I'll probably try!

Brant, why don't you just drive down here for the weekend and we'll figure this out? Don't forget the tester! I'll barbeque!

Robert, Robert, Robert. You know I'm thicker skinned than that! I laughed my ass off with you!
