I am working on our family's geneology for my son. I came across this picture and figured I would share for the car buffs out there. This is an old family sand pit we had in our family way back in Penn. MC

I don't know. If I had to guess I would say about 1930. This is a family sand/gravel pit in Swoyersville, PA. MC

I think it may be quite a bit before 1930. The tires on the trucks appear to be of the solid rubber type. Talk about a bumpy ride! Also the headlamps look like they might be carbide.

The trucks appear to be early to mid 20's.

Agreed-- the trucks are probably mid 20's and the picture around 1930. I am guessing by the guys ages in the trucks. One of them should be "Botch" Kozlek who played for the Giants way back in the day. He was my Dad's favorite Uncle. I am trying to put the family tree stuff together for my son before my parents are gone. Anybody have any idea what kind of trucks they are? Botch also owned the first "Franklin" automobile in Swoyersville. MC

A bit of study of the photo after blowing it up to 600% reveals it may be a very early 1920's Stewart Motor Corporation Truck. The five spoke cast wheels and the nature of the dump mechanism are identical to those used by Stewart. Stewart Motor Corporation was located in Buffalo, New York. It apparently died off in the depression years. As near as I can tell 1936 was their last production year. Info on Stewart is pretty sketchy. Assuming they are Stewart trucks they were Model 10's rated at 3-1/2 tons.

The blow up also clearly revealed the name Kozlek on the dump bed of the truck in the foreground.

Thanks! I didn't see that on the truck till you mentioned it. I did a little research on Botch today-- he played for the Brooklyn Horsemen in 1926 (not the Giants), although that team probably became the Giants...... This was a neat guy-- I have lot's of stories....

Italianguy63 - Since my last post I discovered a bit more info about Stewart Motor Corp. They managed to hang on until some time 1938. Not sure they were still building dump trucks then, it appears they may have only been producing a 1-1/2 ton panel deliver truck. Their 1938 production was around 1,200 vehicles.

Old vintage trucks are a lot of fun to research. There were bunches of small truck companies between WWI and the beginning of the second World War. People you never dreamed of building a truck did. For example: Pierce-Arrow produced trucks at one time.
