Fabulous! Not too many of the old single screen theaters remain, not even in smaller towns. A treasure from the past still surviving.
A novel idea from the 1920's was hotels with a motion picture theater. I don't know how many of those remain, but there is one in Schulenburg, Texas which shows first run movies to this day. Admission is $3.00 and a large popcorn with a large drink is an additional 2.25. A bonus is the hotel is supposedly haunted by three ghosts.
Hey Bennie this must mean you are feeling better? I am so glad to see this is your next project- really great subject and I cannot wait to see the finished product. Of course you will have a couple of cool cruisers out front right?

Tammy, what he didn't tell u was that the reason for the messed up eyes is because she caught him in Victoria's Secret ordering $250 worth of fancy bra's and asking that they be modeled for him. The eyes will be better about the same time that his bride gets out of jail in Lafayette for husband abuse.

Starfire, you've been living down south too long. Single screen theaters?? We got plenty of them. Must be at least 5 in a 20 mile radius of my house. People still going to see first run movies in them. Some people just like the smaller price and the smaller crowds offered by the little old theaters. Popcorn's better and soda's don't cost you a day's pay either. Hell we still have a couple of drive ins too!
Orphans, now you're talking. We still have the BAYSIDE DRIVE INN in Apalachicola - also the single screen (with a balcony) DIXIE THEATRE downtown. Good popcorn, frozen Milkeyways and 25 cent small cokes on Saturday night for you and your date. Nice memories of a good time in which to grow up.

orphans2 I don't know that I've lived down South too long, but maybe so since I've been here most of my life. The big difference in the number of single screen theaters probably lies in the fact in small rural towns in the South the youngsters all take off for the big city because unless they want to stay on the family farm or ranch there are few job opportunities. So many small rural towns aren't even staying even with population as the years go by. Makes it hard for anyone to stay in any kind of business in many cases. Small theaters being an example. The one I mention as being in the haunted hotel is the nearest theater of any kind within 40-45 miles of here, when there was once several.
Keep up the good work Bennie ! Your theater project reminds me of an old one near me in Mt. Airy NC. They still show new releases and on Saturday morning, a local radio station holds a bluegrass and country music show in the theater and broadcasts live on AM 740. Andy Griffith use to go there when he was a kid. He grew up in Mt. Airy.
