Now I am not on here to start anything. But with the economy is going down even more and even the banks have taken a hit. I've talked with a lot of people across the country. Some have to sell there toys cheap. But most have there heads stuck in the sand and say it's going to get better talk about can't see your hand if front of your face. But they believe that big brother is going to pull the U.S out. The news doesn't tell it all but then the government doesn't want them to. Yes, this is a great country we live in. But at what expense. No it's not going to be like it was 50 years ago but it could be. But when a person has to give up everything like his hobby that isn't right. And the funny thing is most people wont do anything until it's to late. Like the optomist that fell off the 20 story building half way down they heard him say "It's alright so far." But I for one do not like seeing people have to give up what they have worked so hard for. Have a nice day.

You guys would think thered never been a recession before. We have them every 8-10 years and so far this isn't even a recession. Now that doesn't mean that I believe everything is great right now, I'm just saying let's get some perspective out there. For goodness sake.

Just stop and think how we compare to the rest of the world. Even in these hard times the U.S.A. is still the best place on earth to live. We might have to change our ways some to get through but we will still be better off than most countrys in the world. I have a rant now and then myself, it's good for you, but in the long run it will work out. I'll tell you Bear, that beer sounds good.

Making 75 cents a hour as a soda jerk. Setting duck pins for 10 cents a game, Gas was 23 cents for my first car, a 50 Chevy hardtop...hard times in 1957.

Making 6 figures, gas is $3.83.....hard times in 2008.

Hey, its all relative and what you make of life.

CR, I think the glass is just the wrong size

Unless it's holding Ol Bears beer, then it's too small

We have had to make some adjustments since the wife lost her job (housing), like we skipped the trip to GGs in Columbus, but we still plan on making it to Somerset, then Louisville.

Just have to adapt and overcome........

If we have the talent to build cars for our hobby, i am sure we will get through a few challenges rather well. It is all relative to your outlook, ......my glass is always half full........it is easier if you feel optimistic.

Jim is right all things are relevant. I too was making $0.75 per hour in 1957, working 3 or 4 hours after school and maybe 8 hours on Saturday. After taxes the paycheck looked real good if it was over $20.00. We were lucky as gasoline was rarely over 19 cents a gallon where I grew up and my '47 Ford Deluxe Coupe would run all week on $3.00 worth of gas. A burger, fries and a malt ran $1.25 at the drive-in burger joint and we had those good old drive-in theaters with buck a car load night. Life was good then. Life is good now with a little common sense judgment about how one spends their money.

I agree that it's easy to fall into the doom and gloom side of things but our memory of the past is short. We've had many bumps in the road in recent history but we always bounced back. Just remember the light at the end of the tunnel isn't necessarily a freight train...it's probably a way out. If we could only get the morons in congress to work for us instead of against us.

Personally Ive adjusted to current conditions by trading in my Grand Cherokee on a Toyota Camry Hybrid. I've gone from 17 mpg to almost 40 mpg. Life is always changing and you have to adapt, in this country we have the freedom to be whomever we want to be and that means we have the freedom to succeed but it also means we have the freedom to fail. Many people don't seem to get that the second part goes hand in hand with the first.

my driver gets about 30 mpg, the pickup about 20-22. I drink cheap beer during the week, Shines beer on the weekends. I still go to the shows i KNOW i'm going to have a good time at, distance be damned. ( a drive to Louisiana is worth it....trust me) I just have to work a little more on the side to make play money. From what i'm seeing the big end players aren't going to be hurt much by this. It's us little guys that are going to have to scratch a little harder.

this is , of course , my opinion, and worth whatever it's worth.

If youi're old enough you remember the "gas crisis" of the early 70's. We all survived that one too! Just have to make adjustments. Ol Bear, I seem to be having trouble with my computer, the threads are not lining up on the new site. Works perfect on the old site though. The computer is like me, resistant to change!! Okay CR a bit of realistic help (maybe). If your computer's operating system is any version of Windows newer than Windows 98, you need to frequently defragment the hard drive at least once a week if doing a lot of internet surfing or heavy duty game playing. Windows uses the hard drive as virtual memory and as a result of that and burst writes to the hard drive things tend to get all garbaged up and programs begin to act funny when they load.

I got my Street Rod Nats registration in on the last discount day (June 30).

My registration paper came back as #7479, which is about normal I think, so maybe Louisville numbers will be over 11,000 again. 17mpg hwy on the hotrod (350/200r/3:73).

I drove to therapy today, on my own, in my suburban. I started physical therapy complaining and moaning and groaning. I looked to my left and saw a teenager come in using a walker and could hardly move -- she had sustained a stroke - and I thought of something that I have said to myself many times across the past 14 years - "I complained because I had no shoes -- until I saw a man who had no feet". All things are relative and this "swell" will level out but we need to help ourselves and not just wait for something done by others to make it better for us. Petroleum products are a futures commodity - speculation drives prices up and down - Congress (sorry I used a curse word) can harness some of the speculation behavior of the greedy rich ones who would suck America dry) and protect American citizens. Just my thought.

Did ya'll notice the higher gas prices get, the fewer the cars choking up our roads? Personally, while I don't like paying over 4 bucks a gallon, if prices continue this way only the real car lovers will be on the road and the rest of the coffee drinkin, cell phone talkin and make-up installin drivers will be on the bus!

Works for me! Get those folks in a bus and not only will the roads clear up, your insurance will go down since they won't be running into one another because they have their heads........ well you know where.

I hate $4.00 gasoline like anyone, but I still see folks at the station go in and buy a pint of water for $1.25. Starbucks is still doing business, people still have cable TV with 200 channels and 8 premiums, cell phones, iphones, blackberrys, hair dressers, gym memberships, eating out, credit cards, car payments, and the list goes on. You can always cut back. Been there, done that, and got the T-Shirt. Oh and at the time, I was IN the oil business. Didn't see anyone crying when I couldn't buy a job or for that matter all the years growing up when my Dad was a Geologist. We weren't gettin rich. It ebs and flows.

We've been through this kind of thing before. It aint pretty, but we'll make it through again. Our country was founded on determination and creativity and I think that will show up again. In the meantime, hold on to your shorts, but try to look on the bright side. I think it would help if the media didn't continually focus on the bad stuff that's goin on though. People might start believing it. IMHO

Neither, try the Spirits aisle at the local supermarket. Probably won't fix anything, but you won't care one way or the other with a proper infusion of spirited fluids. (G)

Yes, this economy sucks but like everyone else, I'm trying to adapt. The people I feel sorry for are the elderly, the people on fixed incomes. Gas up here works out to over $6.00 a U.S Gallon and home heating oil is somewhere around 1.40 LITRE. There's going to be alot of people here this coming winter that will simply FREEZE because they can't afford to heat their homes. It's a dam shame that people like that have to make decisions like, Do I buy FOOD this payday or do I buy Fuel? Somthing needs to change................. Anybody heard what the 2nd quarter earnings at the Oil companies are?? I bet they're reporting RECORD PROFITS. ( A__holes!)

I can only speak for the oil company I work for. 1Q08 was a loss and 2Q08 looks like an even bigger loss. That puts a significant part of my 401K into the dumpster for now. Have a few years to go before I need to touch it and it will hopefully recover.

Driving back from the nat's this morning, I was in bumper to bumper traffic.......so people are not slowing down or staying home.I did notice less spectators at the show, but i think it is because it was 94 degrees with a hundred percent humidity ( or at least that is what it felt like). yes the economy is tough, yes it will stay tough.....but we will not just sit down and give up..

I just got back from a trip to the smokey mts, stayed in elkmont camp ground over 100 spaces most were taken all week. there were more tent campers than in previous years quite a few rv trailers an just a few motor homes most i paid for gas in motor home was 4.31 in tenn. filled up in ga an fl at 3.98 80 gal. as long as i can stand the pressure i'll keep right on living with a few minor adjustments. but as i looked around in the campground i could see a differance in mode of travel, but went into pigeon forge there were alot of people playing around, checked on rooms for grand rod run none, shades of the past some were avilable 3day min $150.00 a day Hey Eriq think your wrong about the recession. o what the hell life goes on.

dixie, im just pointing out that there's a definition of a recession and it's 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth. so far we haven't even had one quarter of negative growth and the last quarter has been revised upward each month since it was released. now that's not to say that this quarter and the next won't be negative and if obama gets elected you can be sure we will absolutely be in a recession for awhile but so far we are not. you think the stock market's doing bad now, wait till obama doubles the capital gains tax on investment (one of his campaign centerpieces is replacing the cap gains tax, currently at 15, up to 29%) , you're really going to see your 401k plummet
