Need a little info/insight--Thinking of putting a pusher fan on the ragtop. Runs down the road just fine temperature wise. At idle it is starting to creep up over 200 especially with a/c on. I have 17 inch flex fan which pulls a goodly amount of air through radiator compared to 7 blade steel fan on my 55. don't have room for fan clutch of the time to put Walker radiator shroud assembly on right now. have 14 x 20 condensor in front of radiator spaced appropriately away from radiator. 14 inch pusher will probably not fit in front of condensor so I was thinking of 12 inch pusher and overflow but they really don't seem to move a whole lot of air. i have 14 inch pusher on the 55 and it does move some air at idle--just wondering if the 12 inch would be worth the effort or just don't get stuck in traffic at Louisville. Thanks Ron and Shine for all your help and advice.

DUAL PUSHER FANS ON A THERMOSTATWOULD PROBABLY BE A GOOD IDEA .

Ken, I have the same issue and similar setup on my '57.

Planning on adding a pusher "that will fit" with the hood support/latch assy taking up so much of the space will be a chore.

Also plan to add a transmission cooler behind the grille to aid in heat being removed from the radiator.

'till then, it's A/C off at red lights and in traffic. Good thing is - the wife "gets it" and doesn't complain

I will never again have a stock type rad in the "V8 position" on any future Tri-5's. Put a after market alum crossflow radiator in the "6 cyl position" with the correct schroaded dual PULLER fans and your overheating probs are OVER. The longer you wait, the more you suffer and the more risk of engine damage or fire. Not to mention, your rad, condenser, pusher idea is flat a$$ ugly. Yep, it's a l'il pricey, but, you do it once, problems solved, inhances the look under the hood and the value of the car. Cheap bandaids like pushers and mechanical fans don't work. Cost me a wad to learn that.

blksheep...chillin...in Charlotte
This is the setup on my last '57.

I don't have any cooling problems with my 55. Running stock radiator--does just fine..Trying to get 47 Chevy ragtop to run a bit cooler at idle. Don't need any magic cures--just a little bit more air flow at idle.

Skip the electric fan and put on the shroud when you have a chance. Make sure with the shroud that the fan blade is spaced roughly half way into the shroud for max effect. The plastic housings along with the motors themselves on some of the electric fans block alot of air and can do more harm than good. If the engine stays under 220 or so you won't hurt anything.

I LIKE THE IDEA BLK SHEEP HAS ,, DONT FORGET A 195 THERMOSTAT,, WHAT DIAMETER IS THE WATER PUMP PULLEY ?? MOST AFTREMARKET PULLIES ARE SMALLER IN DIAMETER AND MOVE WATER TO FAST FOR THE RADIATOR TO 100 PERCENT EFFECIENT ,,JUST MY 2 CENTS ,OL BEAR

drive it. if it aint puking it aint hot. 220 at a light is not hot. 12 in pusher is useless, only gets in the way of flow. make sure your a/c is cycling .

that is what i was thinking--just add an overflow can and enjoy. a/c is cycling. may just add some water wetter(lol)

When I get around to putting A/C in the 55 then will check out other options. Thanks all.

I would not worry about it.Bought a new Corvette in Dec.and it has gauges and not idot lights and the temp.runs 210-212 at idle and 195-197 on road.I checked with other owners and found all run this temp.If were me I'd drive it.

Nothing has changed since Columbus discovered America = pusher fans are junk !! Flex fans are for the quarter mile. Clutch fan ??? Use a deep pitch 6 -7 blade SS blade from Flexalite. Dual fans move less CFM than a full size single puller. Set the Walker on the front of the core support like the six cylinder did.

No problems, no fun with rods. Jim

As stated, pusher fans are worthless and can restrict air flow. Save your money and put it towards A/C on the 55.

Blksheep, my '57 setup is very similar to your picture with two exceptions 1. The chrome!! 2. Using the stock (1980 350) clutch fan.
I made up a tophalf fan shroud to try and help. When I get back home, I will try and send you a picture.
I think from reading this thread, my overheating at idle problem may be more in the fact of the stock clutch fan as Jim said?
And Shine, the a/c is cycling, just replaced it.

So from what I am reading the flex fan is no good for the street and I should use a solid fan. OK the flex fan pulls more air at idle than the solid fan does--so if I have to use a fan for more air flow at idle wouldn't a flex fan be better and rely on air movement and the fan at highway speeds.

The solid fan on my 55 does not pull the air that the flex fan pulls on my streetrod.

Whoops..........just pulled the Flex-a-lite catalog. My fav fan is called a flex fan. ouch. Check 1300 series, stainless, deep pitch, 6 blade. Also 1817, 1818. 1500 for reverse flow pump with serpentine.....got one on our '33 SD.
Still learning, Jim
