The brand-new StreetRodding.com is far along now and while we're still working on some major items, the site is complete enough for us to ask you to please go visit the beta site, play around with it and use it for awhile and let us know your thoughts.

You can view the beta site over at beta.streetrodding.com. Most everything works now but there are things you'll find that are broken. And since I'm working on it at all hours of the day and night, at any given time things may break that were just working a minute earlier.

I'd really appreciate it if you would all visit the new site and give me your thoughts on the general layout and features and design of the new site. What do you like? What don't you like? What would you do differently? Can you find everything you normally do on the current site? What about the new stuff that isn't on the current site? Does is make life easier for you?

Eriq,

I like the design and structure of the new web pages. Looks handsome. My one criticism is the orange on white background doesn't give me enough contrast. Could you use a darker font vice the orange? Thanks.

regards, Ken

WEll it is easy to use and browse thru, but honestly looks kind of 'plain' as far as backgound decor. how about some color here and there?? flames? speed stripes? something to 'jazz it' up a bit?? just a thought. seeing as how I know NOTHING about doing this sort of thing (I can barely use my computer) I'm sure it will be fine.

thanks for the feedback so far guys, i understand your concerns about the pizazz of the look and i thought i'd explain my thought process a bit. on the internet there are trade-offs i have to make in my design specs and one of the things i have to decide is how much "flashiness" to try and add to the site. every spiffy graphic and flame and moving graphic adds significantly to load times and makes it more difficult to read and review the actual content. it's for this reason that so far i've designed the template the way i have. right now it should look the same on all web browsers and also load quickly on your cell phones and other smaller browsers. i'll be able to toss more stuff in once it's done but i wanted to stick with a nice clean layout. (ken i'll work on the orange link text)
i did some work to the forum comments for deleting and editing comments and managing images. check it out and let me know what you think! they work a bit differently now.

Why is it that when I view the forums on the beta site all of the avatars get pushed down and out of place? Eventually toward the bottom of the postings they are totally on the wrong persons comment.

Sorry Eriq, I'm not smart enough with a computer to know what browser I have or where to look for it.

Within your browser, if you click on the menu, "help", then "about", it will be revealed.

Eriq the best enhancements that can be made would be the addition of a quote function for responding or commenting on an existing comment and paged threads would also help a bunch. When a thread gets more than ten or so comments things can become difficult to follow without pages not to mention being slow to fully display the thread when the number of messages/comments extend beyond 20 or so, as they often do. This has to be particularly true for those having only 56K dial up connections.

Eriq,

Not sure if its something on my end or not. Is there something I need to change with my browser? Now every time I try to look at the new site I can get to the home page but nothing else. When I click on something to bring it up I get an error message that says contact website administrator.

There is some weird stuff going on with both the old and new site.

Yup, that is what it is Ken. The big question is why all of a sudden when apparently having no issues before?

The other question is why are multiples of the same topic appearing on the original site? One topic was all of a sudden showing not less than five repeats.

Because the poster more than likely clicked it that many times.

No dixie that isn't it. The problem didn't show up until a couple of response to the original post had been made. I would guess it is some sort of database indexing problem given each time a new comment is made it spreads across all copies of the topic being displayed.

well, theres a reason the new site isn't active yet and that's because i'm still working on everything. it's very close to being finished but there are big pieces left to work on. with a global framework a single error (as you encountered this weekend) can mess up the whole site and that's what happened with you guys. I think i have the issue corrected but it may pop up again as i look for an alternative. i really appreciate the patience you guys are displaying and the help in posting these errors when you find them.

da34guy, one big reason for the new site is that the current one does not display properly on all browsers and even from page to page. on safari it looks downright awful and on firefox on the home page the right column overlaps the middle column. also, from a developer standpoint, the codebase is much much easier to work with on the new site as opposed to the old one. remember, how much you guys hated the last change but now you all like it, it's the not the site, it's change in general. trust me, i'm doing my best to make this site the best site on the net for rodders and i'll continue working toward that goal till some rich dude shows up on my doorstep and offers to buy the company hehe.

Thanks again!
