Was diggin' around in some boxes today and found three Car Craft magazines. One from Dec. 1959, one from Nov. 1960 and one from Sept. 1961 The pics are from the 1959 issue. Some of the things advertized are unreal. Custom Grilles from $19.95,, fuel pumps- $7.95, Seat belts- $3.00, Fuel and Oil Gauges for $2.50. Not to mention the magazine itself.... $0.25. But one thing remains the same, and that's The love we all share in this hobby just like they did back then.

That is cool Russ, I have some old Hot Rod magazines from the 60's and it is funny to see what was the latest new thing. Mine are all together in a book that was originally in a library sale. I never saw the covers- yours is really fun to see! Thanks for sharing

I to have a lot of old car mags from way back. tell me if I'm wrong, I probly am. Starting in the late 70s and early 80s street rodding hit a wall. There has'nt been a whole lot of inovation for the average rooder. A lot of shrink wrap products have came up but I'm talking the average builder. High buck stuff from Foose or Boyd are fun to look at but unaffordable to you and me. I have to admit that rat rods were a breath of fresh air even though a lot poeple did'nt like them. They were thinking outside the box. I look back at some 70s books and its hard to tell the difference to a brand new car in a book today. Its a sign of the times I guess.

41 Kustom, I think you're right about the wall and I think that it was partially due to our governments and insurance companies in the early 70's, putting pressure on manufacturers to get more fuel efficient vehicles. Which was OK ( I guess?) but I'll bet most people and up and coming aftermarket companies lost their enthusiasm for fixing up a vehicle 'cause if it's going to be "Regulated" to death, What's the point of building something in the first place. Might be more costly etc. etc. It just took a while for people to say "OK, We'll play your insurance games "and dodge around the new govt. rules & regs. to make things more desireable for the consumer to be able to fix up something again...................no?

Streetrodding almost died out in the late 70's and early 80's. A number of factors contributed to this, but the biggest was the oil embargoes and resulting fuel crises of the mid 70's. Remember the v6 and 4 banger "streetrods of that era? There were lots of articles discussing this back then. When muscle cars came upon the scene is about when we started losing the influx of young blood into our hobby. A young guy with a decent job could lay down a small down payment and roll off the lot with a factory hot rod that had handling, brakes and enough horspower to blow most current rods into the weeds. All this with a factory warranty. When the muscle cars went away due to emissions and govt mandated fuel economy numbers, then came the bland decade of the eighties with their pastel colors. Just how many Seafoam Green rods can you look at and still remain excited. Say what you will about those guys, but the likes of Boyd and Lil John Buttera, with their innovative ideas are responsible for revitalizing the street rod hobby.
