How well does a "line lock" work as a parking brake.... is it electric.... can I set it and turn the car off... where do you get them? What about the disc brake on the driveshaft? Anyone have experience with these?

Al-- I think the line lock just pressurizes the regular system hydrolically. Since it is dependant on the primary system to work-- it won't count on a safety inspection. I have seen the disc brake on the driveshaft-- That is probalby a good solution.

Don't get me started on my debauckle... whoever cut the Jaguar rear out that I am using on my project took the parking brakes off. It took me a LONG time and EXTENSIVE effort to find the replacement calipers. It was hard to find what I needed in a salvage yard. And even harder to get them out because of where they are mounted! That was a tough day. MC

Hi Al, I agree with Shine. A line lock should be used in racing only. What happens is that you apply your brakes causing pressure in the lines. A line lock is a switch controlling a valve hooked to the pressure line to the front brakes. When switched, it holds pressure on the front brakes, you then let off the brake pedal freeing the rear brakes. Now, you can do a burn on the rear tires to heat them but the front brakes are holding the car from moving. When finished, you throw the switch releasing the front brakes and go racing. The valve is not something you want to trust on a street car as a parking brake. A slight bleed-by is not noticable when doing a burnout, but on the street it could cause the loss of pressure on the brakes over a short period of time. Parking brakes should be a mechanical affair that will hold till they are released on purpose.

Do real brakes on the rear or on the drive shaft. The car at the bottom of the hill will thank you.

Not to mention that you need electrical current to engage a line lock. To use it as a parking brake will eventually run the battery down, and then no more parking brake! Using a parking brake on the driveline does work, but I would only use it on a lightweight car due to potenital stresses on the caliper and mounting brackets. Do like shine says with the foot pedal, or I have used the hand lever from a Geo Metro many times and they also work well.

I had one on my last streetrod and it was a stupid device... unless you like to do burn outs. It's NOT effective as a park brake. In fact, I removed it.
