Shine,

The fact that the PC booted up is encouraging.

Now right-click on the start button, and click "explore". That will open a window that show you the file structure on the hard disk. Look for folders named "My Pictures" or "My documents". If you find those (and we hope you do), you can copy the files on a USB drive or CD-Rom if that PC has one and thus recover them.

Recovering emails is more difficult. What email software were you using? If you were using MS Outlook, you need to search for, find, and copy "outlook.pst" and that would be it. But it is usually not that easy.

Keep up posted...................

regards, Ken

That is weird. Have you tried "system restore"?

It basically resets to a previous time/date of your choosing.

With all that valuable info and data in there I think I would break out the credit card and just call 1-800-geek squad.

At least they speak english as apposed to Dell support. (I don't speak Indian or Pakistani...)

Sorry I can't be of much help man, I feel your pain.

Shine , take it to a pro and let him see what is what. Did you have the computer stored by a magnetic source or a high voltage source? That could literally ruin it. Take it to a computer doctor - if it can be retrieved, they can do it and cause no other accidental damage. Good Luck

Shine, go back and look at the box that was setting on top of the computer when you found it. Was it about the size of a 4bl and said Edelbrock somewhere on it?

As I understand it, everything you ever did on a computer you can dig out. The cops here did it to find the missing girl thats been on the news. Its called digital forensics. To bad it was to late for her. But they got the bastard, now if they would only turn him over to the public, justis would be served.

There's your best bet. Everything should be in tack, unless the hard drive took a hit or the motherboard took an electrical shock. Even then the stuff should be recoverable. I had a lightning surge hit my computers two years ago. Computers were fried but I was able to remove the hard drives, put them into USB external boxes and then download 99% of the stuff to a new drive. I would think that unless your system suffer an even worse fate, your data should be able to be recovered.

Hope you get your stuff back.

Shine, Johns advice on the motherboard battery might be good advice. About a year ago, I thought the hard drive in my home PC took a dive, thought I lost everything on it, even bought a new hard drive to replace it. After installing the new hard drive it still didn't work right. On the advice of a web site called Virtual Doctor, I replaced the motherboard battery (a #CR2032 from the local Walgreens pharmacy), the damn thing worked like nothing had ever been wrong with it. Now I have 2 hard drives to store more crap on.........lol

The CMOS battery inside computers stores information such as the system time and system settings for your computer. If the battery is dead, you will not have the correct time on the PC. Do you have the correct time?
A failed CMOS battery would not be responsible for a loss of files.
Shine, did you try the virus checker? http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Take it to your local guy for him to repair/recover your files.
