Well- I finally decided to swap the rear gear in the 33. Out came the guzzler (but fun) 3:55 and in went the econo (and oh so boring) 3;00.. Here are a couple pics of the swap- I know its not a big deal just thought I would try to contribute to the " about cars "topics a little bit.. It would have been nice to know exactly how much difference in mpg this would have changed but I know For sure it will make it better on the highway at 75-80.. this car has spent most of its life in the trailer but Shes about due to get the crap drove out of it!!!.lol p.s the red one is the new one- black is the 3;55

my only question....do you have plans for the 355 or are you going to keep it in the hopes that we will see lower fuel prices again??

Tammy- I am gonna put the 355 in my dads 37- his already has a 355 but it is getting noisy. He has an overdrive so it is a good combo. Really the 355 was to low for my car with a 350 th anyway- fun around town but a little to low for highway speeds- TOMMY- Like I just said Dad has a 4l60e (same gearing as 700r) and I personally think a 373 is a little much- But I like to be able to run a little faster at lower rpms. His lt-1 /4l60e with 355 get 25-27 mpg and seems pretty fast to me. I drove it home from knoxville in may and we ran with traffic cruising 85-90 mph on the interstate and it was just perfect.--BEAR- put that 8 inch posi on ebay!! it will bring some bucks!! 8 inch posis are rare and pretty pricey!!

I have a 355 with my big block, it is a Chevy of course but I still have the original 308 and if I can find the time after the show is over that is what is going back in. I would love to see that tach below 3200 on the highway again.

Dave,

By the way, you may need to apologize to your Dad for me. I think my wife was drooling on his '37, while I was drooling on your '33 at the show this past weekend.

Will wear drool cups next time

Beautiful rides.......

Yeah-- one of the good/bad things. I can get good gas mileage as well as bulletproof strength... but not much fun. However, the older units from the 70's were typically posi and good ratios (3.07, 3.23, 3.54) if I remember right off the top of my head. I had one of those on my last 350 SBC and it worked awesome. I'm looking for MPG this time around.

replace those 350's with 2004R and keep the fun Talk to Phoenix Transmission.... almost a direct replacement if you have the short tailshaft.... I'm running 3:73 with mine.... it will go sideways off the line... I'm going to take it out on the freeway today to see what rpm it cruises at in overdrive... more later

If you guys do a web search for a piece of software (freeware) called "Drag Strip Plus", it allows you to put in your wheel diameter, tranny and rear end ratios, and your engine specifics. It calculates 1/4 mile ET's and other data such as RPMs, etc. It is very helpful in planning this stuff out. If you can't find a copy and you want it-- e-mail me and I will give you a copy. It is an old DOS based program but it works! MC

Thanks Jim-- I am going to use the 2.88 with the 4L60 overdrive. The LT1 should have enough torque to allow it to work, but it won't have a lot of wheel spinning fun!! But with the price of gas, at least I can drive to to shows without going broke. My last project only got about 11MPG. This would be better! MC
