I have a Walker radiator that came with a Spal fan mounted to it. The fan was mounted with plastic fasteners that go into the radiator's fins, but don't protrude through the front. This is a Model A, remember.

Well a long time ago I didn't have enough room between the water pump and the radiator for the fans. The tabs holding the fan to the radiator had to be cut off to remove the fan. Since then everything is lined up properly and I need to remount the fans. I can't find any type of fastener that will go ONLY PARTIALLY into the radiator.

Anybody know of what I'm looking for?

Can you make any brackets to go to the side of the radiator? Or does the shell wrap around the back side?

Just make "L" brackets out of sheetmetal. Never liked or used those plastic gizmo's.

Mine is a vertical flow unit. Strap would be easy enough to build brackets and attach to the outer edges (thanks Brian and Les) but I thought there may be something a little more "simple". Darn Henry Ford had to leave the A-Bone radiator out in front and uncovered for everyone to see!

I called Walker and they didn't use this type of mounting, so somebody added it at some point. Guess I'll just use some aluminum strap.

Just FYI, they asked if it was a dual fan or single, I told them dual 10". They said that although they sell two dual fans for my radiator they recommend a single larger unit mounted up fairly high on the radiator. Just thought I'd throw that in because I haven't heard any discussion lately regarding which cools better... uh oh, what did I just start?

A 14-16" up top will cool better than duals

Thats a fact.

Depends on the cfm's of both types. Go with a high cfm single or high(er) cfm duals. I also recommend fabbing some brackets over the plastic stuff, that's what I did with mine.

Don is correct on the large single fan. Mount it high.

Not putting a shroud on it... yet. I'm betting that I will be before summer is over though. It's been over 100 every day here since the end of May! For now just going to put it on a relay with a toggle switch and keep an eye on the gauges.

Ok, if I chime in?
Air movement is what we are after and a lot of it at slow speed, volume, not just velocity. Two small fans may cover more surface area, but may not move enough air, volume wise over the core where it is hottest, which would be the top hose inlet area. Ok, that said, a larger fan by itself up over most of the top of the core, one that moves alot of air at a high rate of speed(velocity) is definitely better than the other setup.

That said, nothing will ever beat a fan shroud that covers the entire core that funnels air through a central fan, acting as a venturi of sorts.

Make sense? Ok, take a look at your beloved electric fan. I has a shroud already built into it, the outer ring is it's shroud for the blades. It will not pull air from out side that ring/shroud, no matter what you do as long as it is contacting the core surface. If you make a shroud that covers the rest of the core surface and butts up to the outer ring, you will do nothing but block off the core from air flow when the vehicle is moving and actually will have insulated it. The shroud must be built around the entire core and the fan must be mounted to the outside of it, so the fans built in shroud will be better utilized.
Basically you will have expanded the electric fans shround to what ever size and shape you needed.

Hope that helps

Spal has 4 arms rhar snap into the housing and extend out to the radiator perimeter metal as brian41 sez. Check the site or call Yogi's on this site. Make certain you keep it a puller. Place the top of the fan 1/8" from the bottom of the tank. The hot spot is at the top of the radiater.

No problems, no fun with rods.

Happy Bang Day, Jim
