Here in Charlotte NC last week on the news there was a story about a lady CEO of a company that people were complaining about her salary. Last year she made $700 in salary and had $800 put in her retirement fund so when she retires she will draw 60 % of her salary. Seems that most of this companys CEO's only make 250 to 270 per year and most all management personell get an average $100 per year with retirement and all other benefits. Now the real kicker is this lady is the CEO of the charlotte branch of THE UNITED WAY, yes the non profit company that you send your money to out of your paycheck each payday. Seems to me someone is putting the majority of our money in their pocket. How much have they given to the people that got flooded out a few weeks ago. It was said they bring in 55 million a year. They ain't going to get anymore of mine from now on. I will send a check to the people I find that need it the most myself. RED

You are so right Red. I shut off the united way 30 years ago. I did some checking up on them back then and discovered basically what you said, they over paid themelves. Also discovered in my county there was no united way,so no one from my county got a dime. I then discovered some of these programs they supported i did not agree with, they went beyond giving someone a helping hand. All this and the company got a big shiny placque to hang up from u.w. thanking them for participating, although they didnt donate a dime,it was the employees. Funny i didnt see any other names on that sucker. So educate yourself where your donations go...How do you spell placque?

That is awful!!! I am sad to hear about that. I do most of my charity work at the local level or through my church.

This is nothing new. United Way has had a high percent of their revenue going to pay administrative costs (such as salaries) for years. At one point it was well over 20%. I always like to see what their ratio of admin to total expenses are before I give to anyone. 3 percent or less is ideal, anytihing more is iffy. Anything over 10% indicates some one is doing very well, but it's not the people being served. United Way used to be the primary charity for the State of Maryland employee contributions, but not anymore. After the high salary scandal of a few years back, the State switched to another charity group.

The things the United Way are best at is paying themselves, buying advertising, and holding banquets to pat themselves on the back for having screwed the dummies sitting at the tables eating the obligatory over baked chicken breast, half cooked green beans or English peas, and a blob of something the kitchen staff is passing off as mashed potatoes. All followed up with a blob of chocolate flavored whipped vegetable oil which they call Chocolate Muse.

No company or government agency should be involved in endorsing charity organizations for the purpose of intimidating workers into contributing to the charity. That's the United Way!

Most charities function this way. Just check out the Red Cross balance sheet. Many years ago I was a victim of a terrible flood in Conn. and the Red Cross was there SELLING COFFEE AND BLANKETS TO THE VUCTIMS!

Grant6 is right about the Red Cross. The Red Cross recieved millions of dollars in donations after the tsunami event in the south pacific, but used most of the money to fund their own coffers under the quise of saving it for future needs and events. The purpose of giving the money by the contributors was to help the suffering in that calamity, not for some future purpose. Stuff like that makes it difficult for me to give anything but blood to the Red Cross.

Starfire...... Don't read things into statements that aren't there. I made no mention that the State was endorsing a charity for the purpose of initimidating workers into contributing to the charity. That may have happened where you work, but not here. All giving is optional. For those who want to give, they can choose to which charity they wish the money to go. The charities were from the National level to the neighborhood level. When I participated, I always chose a senior center in my Mom's hometown where she also gave her time to help others. There was no intimidation or arm twisting. You contributed or you didn't. Personal choice.

I kicked united way in the a_s years ago. Back in 1970 I stoped giving to the Red Cross when I saw how they treated service men fighting for our freedom. My only charity's now is Make a Wish Foundation and The Association For The Help Of Retarded Children and of course our Vets.
