Being as the 2nd Ammendment post caused so much interest, how about the subject of Concealed Carry Permits? In Kentucky we have what is called a (CCDW) Concealed Carry Deadly Weapon permit. This pertains not only to firearms but includes switchblade knives, nun-chucks, tasers, or anything else considered to be a deadly weapon. Kentucky also has the "Castle" law where citizens can take action they deem necessary should they feel threatened in their automobile or home. I don't know about you, the Kentucky laws are just fine by me. I don't believe there should be any firearm restrictions for law abiding citizens. FBI records indicate crime levels have decreased where concealed carry laws have been initiated. Thugs think twice if they think you may be armed.

unfortunately laws vary from state to state. We can't carry them loaded here, but permits are issued to carry. I don't know how hard they are to get. I have noticed a large increase in the amount of permits being applied for as you need to advertise in the local paper that you are applying for one. I don't think you really know what will happen to you when you shoot someone in your home. I think it depends on the judges attitude that day. On a brighter note, we had an elderly ex marine who was sleeping when two men broke in. He hollered to them from the top of the stairs and they shot at him. He had his own pistol and shot back. He was evidently a better shot because they missed him but he wounded one and killed the other! No charges were filed......CR

CR carrying an unloaded weapon wouldn't do anyone much good, a thug could take it away from you. Chalk one up for the ex-marine.

One of our local cops in Dearborn went to prison a few years ago for not showing the proper restraint. A thief led him in a car chase. Pulled him over and the guy was fighting him. He pulled his gun, but hit him on the head with it, instead of shooting him. I thought that was proper restraint! But the guy died so the cop went to prison. I thought it was a dirty deal for him. He served I believe seven years and of course could not rejoin the police force.

Everyone should be allowed to protect themselves, their family, and their property. We have a version of the "Castle" type laws here in Texas. We also have concealed weapon permits which any non-felon can obtain after having completed a training course with the weapon they will be permitted to carry. In other words, a permit only allows one to carry the weapon they are trained on (a good thing for most people). There are some exceptions which can apply to the training requirement. Currently there is a movement to allow those with permits to wear their weapon openly (kind of hard to conceal a weapon wearing a tank top and shorts on a jogging trail) (Duh!).

Living out in the country as I do there are times on my own property I will be wearing a pistol of some sort (usually a .45 ACP) simply because it is possible to encounter anyone of a variety of poisonous snakes, Bobcats, Cougars, wild hogs, Coyotes, and wolves. I also usually have a large bore rifle (a good old M14) or 12 ga. shotgun within reach on those excursions.

As an old Marine the one thing which concerns me about just any individual having weapons to protect themselves is their willingness to actually use it. I have always had a fear of someone thinking they could protect themselves and ultimately finding themselves being shot or killed because they hesitated. As I have told more than one person; "Don't ever display a firearm unless you know you will have no problem pulling the trigger."

Hurrah for that "old Marine" in Delaware, they ought to find a metal to give him.

To comment on your story about hesitating: a friend heard someone stealing his Plymouth Roadrunner one night. He went out with his pistol and confronted the duo, but he hesitated shooting and they took the gun from him and shot him in the side, Then they proceeded to take his car and his gun. Moral: don't hesitate!!!

In Missouri, somebody stealing your car is not grounds for shooting someone. You must feel that your life is in danger. Took the CCW class and they stressed that if someone broke into your house and was robbing it, you just cannot shoot him. If you warn them and they run, you have to let them go, and not shoot them. Now................if they come in and they come towards you and feel they are intending to harm you, do not hesitate to protect your self. I keep my loaded at all times and have it within easy reach while sleeping.

I look at it this way, I figure anyone who is in my house without an invitation is probably not there with the best intentions and I'm not going to worry about any excuse for being there they could offer. No "Let's sit down over a cup of coffee and talk about this." Same applies to my property, I figure they are not there looking for donations for the Starvation Army if a U-Haul is backed up to the house, trying to hot wire a car, or hooking up to one of my trailers. (might even let the clowns in the latter case drive down the drive just to see their expressions as a couple of rounds from an M14 tears through their engine block)

zinski3 - Sounds like the best idea in Missouri is to shoot intruders making damn sure they are dead. That way there is no one to dispute you felt your life was in danger.

Yeah, but maybe you better have a "drop" weapon in case. They told us not to say anything if involved in a shooting and tell them you will give a statement in 24 hours after conferring with your attorney. They also told us to be ready to go to jail that night because it is not the officer who arrives job to determine who is at fault, it is the investigating team that will decide that. I do agree that if somebody comes in , they better be invited. Anyone coming in uninvited is there to do me harm. I have no problem in pulling that weapon and using it. My only thing is that if they were stealing my car, I would first warn them to stop and if they came at me, I would drop them like a bad habit. If they turn and ran, I would not persue them. Ron White had a part in his comedy routine where he stated that in Texas, it is against the law to shoot someone in the back if they are fleeing. Ron said he would just keep shooting him in the leg until they turned around to see what the hell was going on, then he would blast them! The man has the right idea.:-)

There is a case right now before the Harris County, Texas Grand Jury where a guy dinged two individuals who had been looting his neighbor's house. Would be legal under our new laws if the neighbor had asked him to lookout for his property. Unfortunately for him he dinged them while on the line with a 911 operator and the guys were apparently running since he got both of them in the back with his 12 ga. It's going to be interesting to see what the Grand Jury does to say the least. Oh, neither of the looters survived.

Hopefully he will get off with nothing, no jailtime or lawsuit! In today's world you get aquitted on a trial, but you get sued anyway and they win. Laws seem to protect the guilty more than they protect the victims. We have a prominent attorney here who was convicted of killing his mistress and sentenced to death. he appealed and appealed until a new law came on the books that says no one can be sentenced to die by lethal injection anymore because it is cruel and unusual punishment. So now he has life in prison. I guess it wasn't bad enough that the woman was shot and then buried at sea in a cooler, you don't want to infringe on his rights. I can really get going on a rant so I'll stop!.....CR

Years ago, a friend of mine in Maryland, looked out of his second story window and saw a guy lying on his back trying to hot wire my friends new Corvette. My friend called the cops, but our of fear that the cops would not get there unitl after the car was gone, fired his pistol at the guy and hit him in the upper leg. Cops got there, arrested the would be thief, and also arrested my friend for discharging a firearm within city limits. To make matters worse, the thief sued my friend for shooting him. Fortunately the judge saw matters differently.

Getting a gun permit in Maryland requires a person to file for a permit, be reviewed by a panel, and to have either been threatened or to have a sound reason for a permit. Nearly impossible for decent people to get a permit. That's why the bad guys like Maryland....they pretty well know who ever they try to rob won't be carrying.

PA has carry laws and getting a permit is not difficult if you have a clean record.

I would prefer it if PA had an open carry law like AZ and several other states.

Update: The case in Harris County that Starfire was talking about where a 62 year old man shot and killed two men after he saw them crawling out the window of his neighbor's house carrying bags of the neighbor's possessions was cleared of any wrong doing. He did confront the men with a 12-gauge shotgun and shot them in the back after the two men came into his yard and threatened him. By the way the two were illegal immigrants from Colombia.

Not only were they illegally in the country, they had been involved in a number of home invasions with a female who just last week was sentence to prison for her participation in those home invasions. This according to my eldest daughter who is the 911/Radio Communications Supervisor for the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office. Fort Bend County adjoins Harris County.
