I just read where a fella is selling off his cars because he says "Retirement forces sale of my collection". I kinda feel for the guy, maybe life dealt him a crappy hand or something but Jeez, if I gotta sell off my cars to retire then just put me in a box and be done with it!! Looks like I'll be working FOREVER!!

The man your taking about could have been forced to retire, (disability, down sizing, company closing, family problems). Who are we to judge?

TYCHOOCHOO is right. Beyond that, if anyone thinks their Social Security and company retirement will get them through their retirement with no hassle, they're probably dead wrong and have not considered the fact property taxes and their share of health care insurance and costs can eat up what they will have or currently have in the from of a fixed income. Taxes and health cost go up, income doesn't! And I didn't even mention utilities and food cost.

i don't think Screw was judging the man. He was just saying how he didn't want to sell his car due to retirement......CR

it is everyday. I'm blessed with the things I have in life. A near fatal construction accident put that thought in me twenty years ago. . .......CR

Your right CR, I realized I was blessed when I returned from the military 38 years ago. The late 60s were nothing to laugh at. Thank god I was able to retire with a good pension and enjoy myself now, but I will never forget the past.

I was also just attempting to expand on the reasons one might find themselves having to dispose of cherished assets. Life is full of surprises but they can be far more dramatic or even catastrophic after one retires. The one I didn't mention is hearing a knock on the door and you find one of your thirty something kids, their spouse, and your grandkids are standing there because they have no other place to go. Jobs lost, unemployment ran out, credit cards maxed, and house foreclosed upon. It happens all the time these days.

sounds like you had it happen Jim. Hope not, but that's what we all signed up for when we became parents....CR

No, thank goodness it hasn't happened to me and fortunately is very unlikely to happen given the nature of employment both my kids and their spouses have.

My friend used the "retirement" term, when he had to/decided to sell his stuff, because he didn't want to tell people he was terminally ill. Hope that guy doesn't have the same issue.

cr55 is right, I'm not trying to judge anyone, and I'm sorry for him or her if their situation is negative but it just seemed wierd , I thought that when you retire, that's the time top play with all the stuff you've worked 35-40 years to aquire. I guess things seem different for me because Retirement for me won't be any different than any other day. Besides , my car is my medication , can't live without my medication. ( Doctors Orders)
