I thought that I knew it all , but..

I just saw a 57 Chevy on the Streetrod Classified "being offered" at a mere $175,500!!!!!!!!!! Does this seem justified to anyone out there? Maybe I'm gettin old and just can't keep up with the current prices. How do you all feel?

I about had a heart attack too CR. Can't imagine spending that much on something I want to drive, but then again that's not my kind of car. To each their own, but I like 'em with homebuilt quality. Different strokes for different folks I keep hearing.

these are not streetrods. first you have a body to restore then the chassis and drive line. the people who have these cars built have little to no interest in pre49 cars or streetrods. there is a whole new world of hotrods out there and i dont mean ratrod crap . the bar gets raised every year in customs .

WoW ! That 175K, would be gone wih just one trip around Memphis on I 240 at Rush hour. Reminds me though that I had one very similar after the Army that I sold for $300 cause the tranny was bad in it. Should have just stored it for the past 40 years.

Ya, we all got stories. I passed on a '57 Conv because I thought it would be cold in the winter. And again I passed on a '57 Nomad because it was copper colored and my wife wanted a red car. And I sold a '63, a '66, and a '58 Vette because my wife and kids didn't fit anymore. The list is endless of cars that were just used cars at the time but are worth more as cores now than I ever got or paid for them. Don't even get me started on the Mustangs, Cameros, Chevelles, and GTO's that have passed through.

That's a ton of $$ but if you consider the cost associated with hand building a car, he's probably loosing money....especially if he paid someone else to do it.

Naah, that car might be a $100,000 car and even that could be stretching a bit. It's a trailer queen with all that chrome in places not really intended for chrome to be. The kind of car some idiot with more money than brains would bid up at a Barret-Jackson auction.

I'm not knocking anyone who has and wants to spend that kind of money. It's just out of my ballpark. It stops me from buying a car because of the rise in prices. I understand that a builder has a great deal of money and especially time, which is not cheap, but it puts it out of touch with the average guy. I'm also a believer in driving them not trailering. Not trying to step on any one's toes or make them mad. I just want to know how everybody feels about these prices...CR

Jim (Starfire)
Do the math-- using $50 per hr shop rate (I doubt anybody's custom shop rate is that low)
52 weeks @ 40 hrs per = $104,000.00
Plus parts and materials
For sure there is more than 175 big ones in that Chevy.
Open yer eyes a little wider.
Got a coupe in the shop right now that was built in 1972 and there was over 100k put into it then.

Does the average guy really want a car like that? Isn't the average guy just wanting something that looks good at the Friday or Saturday night cruise-in, at the occasional community car show, and is road worthy enough to be safe, reliable, and comfortable should he want to go half way across the country in it? Isn't this hobby really about having fun and reliving a by-gone era?

I candidly see no fun in having a car that is trailered everywhere it goes and the most miles put on it are getting on and off the trailer. Ego trip? Yeah, but people with real big egos usually have no fun or friends.

That's an incredible car, your right no average guy could afford it . But why would someone just complete the build and want to sell it? To me that dosen't make any sense, I mean if you can afford to build that and maybe break even, why?
Maybe Dr. Phil can analyze him, I don't know if he's got a big ego, but he certainly has a big wallet.............. congratulations on a beautiful car!

To each their own, right? Who are we to say that the owner of this car doesn't ENJOY it just like you or I enjoy our cars? It's not for me, but I'm not going to degrade the owner and tell you he isn't having fun. I don't think I'D enjoy that car because I'd want to drive the piss out of it and boil the tires at every stop light. I wouldn't be able to do that because I'd keep thinking about what I paid for the car in the first place. Honestly, I'd probably be scared to drive it which takes all of the fun out of it. Someone else wanna tell me rat rodders don't have fun? Or that this isn't THEIR hobby?

People with extremely high dollar cars aren't excluded from "our" hobby, they're part of it. They may enjoy the exact same way most of us do, or heaven forbid they like driving it in and out of an enclosed trailer. So what? It's their car, its their money, let 'em enjoy it.

I can see easily how one could spend that much money to have a car of this caliber built. Add up the parts and you get a rough idea. Don't forget a $30,000 body and paint job, plus the best chrome and stainless money can buy everywhere. I don't see why we're arguing about this car. I'm just glad I got to see it, and I'm glad it was listed HERE!

roadster boy, you know that nobody is going to drive the crap out of a $175,000 car, I will never believe that in a million years! It's like people with the Lincoln navigaters and the Cadillac Escalades, they're never going to take them off road even though that's what they are. After sprnding 60 to 80 thousand dollars for a car you are not gonna tear it up! And you're right Shine, I have no idea of the cost for one of those, I can't comprehend the thought!....CR

Hey CR55 - I beg to differ with you.

I know many guys who drive their MEGABUCK cars.

Case in point- @ the L.a. Roadster show last week I talked with Dennis Varni (AMBR Winner)

He DROVE his roadster from the bay area to L.A. (450+ miles) and back

Billy Gibbon of ZZ Top drives the livin pi$$ out of Cadzilla

Hey guys it ain't about the $$$$$ It's about the fun.

Some got it some don't!!!

Let's STOP the jealosey bull$hit and get back to the cars.

My .02 cents.

CR, It's all about disposable income. You and I wouldn't go racing in a million dollar enzo on a california highway but it's been done(and totaled) Driving these cars aren't tearing them up it's enjoying them. And YES he will drive the piss out of it, and I know this because It's the second one I,ve built for him.

It's not a matter of jealousy Don,and I'm not trying to degrade anyone. I just can't comprehend anyone spending that much on a car! Even if I were able to afford it, I don't think I would do it. I consider myself extremely lucky as I have 4 cars that I own. I have nowhere near that amount in all 4. I guess the thing with me is that I like to build them myself, or with limited help from shops. I'm not downing anyone's shop because I realize not everyone can or wants to work on their own. I enjoy doing my own work when time allows it. nothing like that sense of satisfaction!. I stand corrected Roadster boy............CR

I cant comprehend havin 175k in a car only because its WAY out of my league-It is a Truly beautiful car though. I have done both- The driving the Cars and the trailering thing. Both have there good and bad points. I have never had and will never have a car of that caliber -but I do know that very detailed cars are alot of work if you do much driving. Especially underneath.. it is Very hard (not impossible ) to keep a driven car looking fresh for very long.. but I admire those who can do it..

Megabuck cars are actually on a sliding scale for most. Everybody considers that a certain percent of their income is used for fun items, for some that percentage is just a little larger than others. I was at an open house this weekend and the shop's lowest priced car was around $75,000. They had a 69 Shelby Mustang listed just under $200,000. Believe me, I was surprised when they showed off the room full of cars waiting in line for similar work. It just proves that our hobby has room for everybody and thankfully we all play well together.

people got sick and tired of lousy returns from wall street. i know one person that took a little over 2 mil out of it and put it into land and cars. both give a better return in todays market. of course he did not invest in streetrods. he dropped a bundle at bj last year. when you get to the 150k mark they are investments or just toys. 175k car is no big deal to someone making 500k a year. no different than a guy making 50 buying a 30k bass boat.

now to the build sell point. my ex partner in the van business would spend weeks haggling to buy a vette or something then once he got it he was done. for him it was the hunt , not the kill. some guys enjoy the build more than the finished product.

Like most, I don't have that kind of money and I love building my own, for me thats a hole lot of fun.

Not every one can build cars, that's why we have Rod Shops

And if I had 175K I would buy land.

That's a nice looking 57, but I guess I am just not a 57 Chevy guy because I don't see it as a $175K car. Price might be right when considering the work, parts and profit (yes, there will be profit, no body works for free). But to me it just does not say $175 big ones. Just my .02 and I know I will be crucified by some of the builders here, but as someone once said...."beauty is in the eye of the beholder". And to me this one is just not that great.

orphans2 - I would agree with you 100%. I've had a real love for street customs for some 53 years now and that car just doesn't scream out loud to me at all. Nice car? Yes. Truly out of the ordinary? No. A $175,000 car? Not!
