last year i decided to shut down when and if i ever finished the 2 vettes :) and just work on my own stuff. i think i need a keeper or something. all of a sudden i am answering the phone all day. i've agreed to do some paint and a couple of clips but still no turn keys .vettes are close . ready to fire the 62 and get it gone. but when the 62 leaves my pu takes it's spot. i need it to drive . my 1ton gets about 14 mpg. so it is retired to pulling trailers. and yes bill inderweed is about to take it's room back. i'm done with woodwork now. just something new to chew on.......i'm tired of oil and politics :)

Shine you'll find it is hard to get out of business totally when your business is located where you live. Even after disconnecting the business phone line I actually had people drive up to the house and knock on the door two years after having decided no mas.

Need to drive? The best thing to do is to make that the priority. Get a new cell phone with a different number to take with you. Just make sure you don't tell anyone the number or warn those you give the number to it is not for public consumption and not to be shared with anyone else.

dont mind doing small jobs but no more turn key. i can make a little more building to sell but most important is i will have no one to please but me and no time table. lot less stress. i hate finishing a job for someone else. they get excited and in a hurry and turn a fun build into a get it done and out of here. i think i have 3 pick ups sold and by myself thats 3 years of work.

I can imagine the day that I can work on only my own stuff.... unfotunatly if it ever does happen it will be a long long time. Lots of years to go before I can be "independant", Retired or whatever. I dont know about you shine but I am ready for a car to have fun with- Not all the bling.. I am soooo sick of rubbing and cleaning. My next ride will be a pre 48 something to throw a cooler in the back and go have some fun. Maybe knock the bugs off every other year or so. The trailering and cleaning underneath has run its course with me..

Hey Shine take it as a compliment and testament to the work you've done over the years. Even if you don't wanna, people still want you to!

Hey Dave, buy my '41! I'll even clean and polish it for you before you pick it up! Of course after that it's up to you...

You guys slay me. I'd drive a good running flatty anywhere I wanted to go. The only problem any of the old engines of that era had was poured babbit bearings and oil filtration which required oil changes frequently, i.e.; at 1,000 - 1,500 mile intervals. A flatty in a street rod with a good radiator and insert bearings should be very reliable. When I was a kid the family took a vacation in 1948 in a 1947 Buick in August (swamp cooler hanging in a window) from far East Texas to California on U.S. 80 and back via Route 66 and there were no problems with that old straight 8. Did have to get an oil change in California though and made many stops to refill the swamp cooler.

We're robbin' Shine's thread here, but oh well. I love my flathead, but it's not set up for freeway cruising at 80 mph to keep up with traffic. I have NO qualms about flatmotors as long as they're built for the purpose they're being used for. My stock flatty will run 65 mph on the highway and gets 18 mpg in town, but I'm not interested in making a week long trip with it. However, with a fresh motor, 5-speed tranny and good gears I'd drive it anywhere anytime. I'm not in the "small block Chevies for everyone" camp, although there is certainly something to be said for cheap and readily available parts for them.

More than 20 years of production history proved the flathead V8 a reliable motor, but they weren't driven at 80 mph for hour and hours at a time, day after day.

Dave, I gotta second the notion about Ken's rag top. I thought the car was in good shape before, knowing Ken, it's got to be outstanding now! Well worth whatever he is asking.

Oh and Shiner, I don't believe it for a moment that you would ever give in to retiring.

Note I didn't say give up!.......

Reborn- I seen your rag top on rj.com- looks like an awesome car! but I got the 33 cabriolet and a c-5 vette convertible so I am really lookin for a coupe or sedan.. I gotta liquidate my Bike or trade it in before I can do anything anyhow. I was thinking out loud more than anything.. I wouldnt mind trading my 33 cabriolet down on something but not alot of people looking to trade up and even less looking to buy higher dollar cars right now..I plan to take it to GG columbus . See what happens there.

Well Shine, don't feel bad. Every time I go to do just about ANYTHING I end up way off track. Each moment of our lives is filled with decisions that take us away from the initial objective, some good and others...well. Started to build a 49 Ford and ended up looking like a 32 Ford roadster!

A word of caution to all,I use to think of retirement and all the things we were going to do.Two week before turning 62 I was told I had mouth and throat cancer and didn't know it because nothing hurt.Believe me nothing is same after cancer even tho the doctor says we got it all which means all we can see.I was forced to retire at that time and all dreams was out the window.Eight years after my cancer my wife ended up with same cancer and only difference was mine was on left side and hers on right.Doctors say they never heard of couple having same cancer and no history in either family. All retirement savingss went to pay medical bills plus had to refinance our home due to no insurance .we had paid off our house two months before my cancer.Sorry to make this so long but I need to say RETIRE AND DO WHAT YOU WANT WHILE YOU CAN.

RETIRED???? Allow me to enlighten you about retirement. A few years ago, after 2 major back surgeries and going deaf, I was forced into early retirement. You cannot imagine how much I would love to find someone who would hire this worn out old man so that I could get back to work and get some rest. Being retired around here just makes you the go-fer for most everyone I know. Since I am retired and have nothing to do, everyone is doing me a favor by allowing me to take care of all their business for them. Go ahead Shine, retire, I've got some equipment you could paint to keep busy for a while.

(Hotrodgene, this post is not related to yours. My heart and prayers go out to your and yours. Can't imagine going through what you and your spouse have. Hope things are good for you now. God Bless.)

Go for it Shine! After building homes for 22 years and always on a strict time schedule, I just got tired of it and quit. You need to spend some time for yourself. life is too short to always follow someone else's time line. The last two homes that I built took me longer than 6 months and I enjoyed the hell out of it! Always had to have them done in 90 days or less to meet my obligations. That meant saturdays and sundays a lot of the time. No time for yourself or your family. Hotrodgene, I'm really sorry to hear of your misfortune, and I hope everything is going good for you and your wife. You have my prayers and thoughts.....................CR
