Some of you guys may think it is easy why is he asking,Here goes I have installed a elec.fan and believe I must add a relay. The folks I bought from gave me a diagram of how to install but I don't understand.I have also installed a thermostat malual for turning on and off but after installing same I have changed my mind and and wired to lead for compressor(hot)so it will turn on with A/C.The diagram I got says #30to fan,#85 to grn,#86 12V ign.on #87 fuse 12v.Should I install relay between compressor hot lead and manual off and on switch or between the manual switch and fan. Also would I still need hot lead for #86 and #87 or can I just jump from86 to 87.Hope some one can understand what I am asking. Thanks,Gene

you have a power lead to the relay batt + -87. this supplies the power to the fan. you have another power in that closes the relay to turn on the fan , from switch 86. you have a ground 85. and then a + lead to the fan 30. do not use the compressor wire to run the fan relay. i use a trinery switch on the dryer. if you have a computer car it will be different as you will be breaking the ground not the + from a switch. give me a call if you get stuck . relays drive me nuts. after years of using them i still drag out my diagram each time.

Here's a link to a Spal fan wiring tech sheet. There's a schematic for single and 2 fan applications with relays. When I did mine, I wired the fan/relays as a ground circuit. You can do it either way, mine just happened to be switched as a ground circuit. Per Shine's advice, I also wired it through the trinary switch to kick the fan on if the AC head pressure went too high, which it often did.

tryinary switch works like a binary switch plus it turns on the fan when the compressor switches on

Binary switch cuts off the AC compressor when pressures are too high or too low. Trinary does the same thing but also turns on your condenser/radiator fan when head pressures are too high. Added cooling flow over the condenser will lower head pressures.

You guys are the greatest and the reason I like this site above all.Evertime I have needed help you have been there and your help is right on.I have the fan in car and relay installed as suggested and alll seem to operate fine.I did not hook to comp but instead used a 12v source that is hot with key on and a constand 12V from battery.Only thing left is to install a fuseable link in system. Thanks for alls help and hope I can return my knowledge some day.Gene

Does the trinary switch automatically turn on the fan when the a/c compressor comes on or only when the head pressure is too high?

on at a certain pressure then off. it's a preset pressure switch. most times the fan will be on anyway because of engine temp. it is just a safety to keep from building excessive head pressure.
